You can never have too many great role-playing games. Even though several major RPGs come out every year – with many becoming contenders for Game of the Year, like last year’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 – fans are always eager for the next exciting release. Despite the fact that RPGs are typically very long, offering huge worlds to explore and often taking over a hundred hours to complete, players consistently enjoy getting lost in their stories, connecting with the characters, and experiencing those meaningful, personal moments.
The future looks great for RPG fans! The next few months and years are set to be particularly exciting, with several large-scale Western-style RPGs in development. While some won’t be out until 2027, there’s a lot to look forward to. Let’s explore the upcoming RPGs planned for 2026 and beyond, focusing on what makes each game special and when you can expect to play them.
This list highlights role-playing games (RPGs) expected to release in 2026 or 2027. We’ve only included games with at least a rough release timeframe, so major Western RPGs that are still years away, such as The Elder Scrolls 6 and Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, aren’t included here.
Gothic 1 Remake
A Smaller-Scale RPG To Oppose Modern Trends Of Gigantic Games
Unlike most games on this list, the Gothic 1 Remake is a reimagining of an existing title. With the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake stalled, this project hopes to honor the beloved RPG series by recreating its special, intimate feel – a contrast to the large-scale worlds common in today’s RPGs. The original Gothic stood out thanks to its carefully designed and unforgiving world, memorable characters with their own lives, and the many ways players could shape their experience – from choosing a faction to deciding which quests to complete.
The Gothic 1 Remake is striving to offer a comprehensive experience, incorporating feedback from the Nyras Prologue demo and updating older elements like combat to meet today’s expectations. Currently, the game is on track to launch in early 2026, potentially letting fans play it within a few months.
Fable
Has The Potential To Be RPG Of The Year
The upcoming RPG Fable generated a lot of excitement at the recent Xbox Direct. Playground Games, the developer, finally showed off gameplay and explained their vision for the game’s reboot. Players can look forward to a beautiful and unique world – described by the developers as a fairy tale setting rather than traditional fantasy – along with impressive graphics, a detailed character creator, and choices that truly matter. The game promises complex moral decisions and engaging interactions with fully voiced characters who have their own lives and personalities.
The new Fable game seems to be focusing more on creating a rich world to explore than on fast-paced combat. The developers are emphasizing the game’s unique features and possibilities over action sequences. Currently, Fable is slated for release in Fall 2026, likely before November, to avoid clashing with the release of GTA 6. Notably, Fable will be one of the first major Xbox games available on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5 at the same time.
The Blood Of Dawnwalker
Vampires Have Always Been A Great Match RPGs
As a huge RPG fan, I can tell you The Blood of Dawnwalker is something special. It really focuses on how your choices matter and what happens because of them, but it also does something really different with the story. Forget following a set path – you can pretty much jump into any quest whenever you want! But here’s the catch: every quest you finish moves you closer to the ending. It’s designed so that no two times playing the game will ever be the same, and honestly, it feels like they’ve finally delivered on that promise we always see in game ads!
Although The Blood of Dawnwalker might not have the same polish as major, modern games, it’s steadily improving based on what fans have been saying. Changes like a better camera angle and smoother combat already suggest the game will be worth checking out when it releases in 2026. The developers haven’t announced a specific date just yet.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn
An Ambitious Sci-Fi RPG To (Hopefully) Propel Owlcat Games Into The Major Leagues
Owlcat Games, known for their role-playing games like Pathfinder and Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, is taking on its most ambitious project yet with The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. This game aims to combine their RPG expertise with faster-paced action, all within the gritty and realistic world of The Expanse. Players will create their own character and become entangled in a sprawling conspiracy.
The new game, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, clearly takes cues from the Mass Effect series, much like how BioWare updated its own formula over time. Gameplay will include cover-based shooting, sections in zero gravity, and a team of companions – with two characters supporting the player. Players will also have their own ship to travel between locations in the Solar System, like Ceres, Mars, the Moon, and Ganymede. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, the game could potentially launch in 2026, though this isn’t confirmed.
Clockwork Revolution
Steampunk Plus Time Travel Is The Perfect Set Up For InXile’s Biggest RPG Yet
Owlcat Games isn’t alone in its quest to push the boundaries of RPGs. InXile Entertainment, a studio with over twenty years of experience, is hard at work on Clockwork Revolution, a visually impressive and highly ambitious steampunk RPG. It’s their biggest game to date, built using Unreal Engine 5 to create a stunning world. Clockwork Revolution features detailed steampunk designs, reminiscent of games like BioShock and Lies of P, which are a rare treat for players.
Beyond its impressive visuals, Clockwork Revolution aims to deliver thrilling first-person gameplay with unique weapons and powers, all wrapped in a compelling story with interesting characters and meaningful choices. Currently, it looks like the game will likely release in 2027, considering the limited recent news and the fact that InXile Entertainment hasn’t shared a specific release timeframe for their largest project yet.
Exodus
Far-Reaching Consequences On A Scale Rarely Seen Before
Sci-fi fans might be in for a treat with two large-scale role-playing games potentially releasing close together. While Archetype’s Exodus, an action RPG announced in 2023, is now expected to launch in 2027 – later than some hoped – it’s looking promising. Exodus aims to deliver a rich and detailed new sci-fi world with a strong focus on story, player choices, and a deep backstory. If released this year, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn would follow closely behind.
It’s hard not to compare Exodus to Mass Effect – the core concepts are quite similar. Like Mass Effect, Exodus features your own spaceship and crew, exploration of deep space, ancient artifacts, alien technology, and interactions with various intelligent races. However, Exodus adds a unique element: time plays a significant role on a grand, cosmic scale. The game will have players returning to familiar places and characters after years have passed, and these choices could redefine player agency in the genre, reminiscent of the time-travel mechanics in Clockwork Revolution.
The Witcher 4
A New Open-World RPG Benchmark In The Making
Forget 2026 – the next Witcher game is already one of the most hyped open-world RPGs in development. Some fans are even more excited about it than The Elder Scrolls 6. Given that CD Projekt Red is known for making incredible RPGs, players are expecting another huge success that could redefine the genre, just like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt did ten years ago.
I’m so hyped for The Witcher 4! From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be a massive leap forward for CD Projekt Red – they’re saying it’s their biggest and most ambitious game yet. They’re building a brand new protagonist, a whole new part of the Witcher world to explore, and the graphics are going to be incredible thanks to a new game engine. What really excites me is that they’re promising a world that truly reacts to your decisions, and a story with real choices that matter. Fingers crossed it comes out around 2027, and even more amazingly, they’re already planning a whole trilogy of RPGs over the next six years after that! It sounds like we’re in for a long, incredible ride.
