When The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+ in 2019, it revitalized Star Wars. The show launched Disney’s live-action Star Wars television series, making it possible for shows like Andor, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, and the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries to further explore the Star Wars galaxy. A major highlight was Grogu, who quickly became a beloved character and the franchise’s most adorable hero, appealing to Star Wars fans of all ages.
The upcoming movie starring The Mandalorian and Grogu isn’t just a continuation of the Disney+ series – it’s a fresh start for the Star Wars franchise. With Lynwen Brennan and Dave Filoni now leading Lucasfilm, this film will define the direction of Star Wars moving forward.
When Does The Mandalorian and Grogu Come Out?

The most recent Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, came out on December 20, 2019 – that was six years ago! Luckily, Star Wars fans don’t have much longer to wait for a new film. The Mandalorian and Grogu will be in theaters on May 22, 2026.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Stars Familiar Faces and New Foes
Image via Lucasfilm The new series, The Mandalorian and Grogu, will continue to explore the close relationship between Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu as they journey to new planets in the Outer Rim. Pascal has been working on other popular projects like The Last of Us and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. His portrayal of Din Djarin was instrumental in making The Mandalorian a major success within the Star Wars universe.
David Acord will once again provide the vocalizations for Grogu. Having worked as a sound editor on numerous Star Wars films and previously voicing Grogu in The Mandalorian, he’s a familiar part of the character. The team from Legacy Effects, who physically brought Grogu to life as a puppet in The Mandalorian, will also be back for The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Steve Blum is back as the voice of Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios. Zeb was a key character in Star Wars Rebels, and his appearance in Season 3, Episode 5 of The Mandalorian – titled “The Pirate” – confirms he’s still working with the New Republic after the fall of the Empire. Blum is a veteran voice actor known for iconic roles like Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop and Wolverine in numerous Marvel animated shows.
Jeremy Allen White & Sigourney Weaves Join the Cast in Major Roles
Alongside familiar faces, the new season of The Mandalorian and Grogu features a talented new cast. Jeremy Allen White will play Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt. Rotta originally appeared in the 2008 film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which served as a launchpad for the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. While he was a baby during the prequel films, trailers reveal Rotta is now grown up, and Jeremy Allen White will portray him in the era following the original Star Wars trilogy. White is well-known for his roles in Shameless and The Bear.
As a huge film fan, I’m really excited about Sigourney Weaver’s role in the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie! She’s playing Colonel Ward, basically the person who sends Din Djarin – the Mandalorian – on his new adventure out to the Outer Rim. It’s awesome to see her join the Star Wars universe. Of course, she’s a legend – Ripley in Alien, Dr. Augustine and Kiri in Avatar – so she knows how to play a memorable character. Even though her part in this movie might not be huge, it sounds like they’re setting her up for more appearances in the Star Wars galaxy, which I’m totally here for!
Jonny Coyne is now a major villain in the Star Wars universe. He plays an Imperial Warlord and will be the primary antagonist in the new film. Viewers may recognize him from The Mandalorian Season 3, where he appeared as part of the Shadow Council. His role will be much larger in the upcoming movie as Din Djarin and Grogu oppose his plans.
The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Story Will Be a Sequel To The Mandalorian TV Show
Image via Lucasfilm After watching Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventures over three seasons, viewers likely have a sense of what to expect from the new movie. Although the complete storyline for The Mandalorian and Grogu hasn’t been announced, here’s the official description from starwars.com:
With the evil Empire defeated, its former commanders are still causing trouble across the galaxy. The newly formed New Republic is trying to safeguard the freedom won by the Rebellion, and they’ve asked for help from Din Djarin, a famous Mandalorian bounty hunter (played by Pedro Pascal), and his young companion, Grogu.
Even though the summary is a bit unclear, it suggests Din Djarin and Grogu will continue to help the New Republic fight off leftover Imperial forces. This storyline follows the main theme of the show, which previously centered on keeping Grogu safe from Moff Gideon – a villain who was finally defeated in the third season.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Poster Subtly Reveals Details Hiding in Plain Sight
Image via Lucasfilm The new trailer officially reveals returning and new characters, including Colonel Ward, played by Sigourney Weaver, and Zeb Orrelios. It’s packed with both exciting action – like Din Djarin and Grogu battling an AT-AT – and heartwarming scenes. We also see Rotta the Hutt either hosting or participating in a fight that Din Djarin later joins. The trailer highlights Grogu’s growing skills, like swimming and fighting, and showcases the impressive work of the team bringing Grogu to life with puppets and effects.
Looking at the film’s posters and overall design reveals even more about its intentions. The main poster feels like a throwback to classic Hollywood adventure films, and even shares similarities with the Indiana Jones series. The poster’s painted style is also reminiscent of the end-credit summaries in The Mandalorian. This suggests the film aims to appeal to Star Wars fans of all ages who want a grand, cinematic experience.
