Even after more than twenty years, Friends is still a hugely popular and influential show. It’s become a source of comfort for its fans, who strongly connect with the experiences of the six main characters. What’s remarkable is that viewers continue to relate to and enjoy life through the characters’ stories – something very few shows have been able to accomplish.
One of the things that makes Friends so beloved is its consistently excellent writing throughout its ten seasons. The show’s witty and sometimes controversial dialogue, delivered by characters like Joey, Chandler, Monica, Ross, Rachel, and Phoebe, really resonated with audiences.
10. “We Were On A Break!”
First Said In Season 3, Episode 15 “The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break” – Ross
The phrase “We were on a break!” still sparks arguments today. Ross used it as his reason for being with someone else while he and Rachel were separated, believing Rachel’s request for a break signaled the end of their relationship. Rachel, though, saw it simply as a temporary pause, not a complete breakup.
Ross had a hard time coping with the changes in Rachel’s life and, instead of being supportive, he created drama. While his reaction is obvious, the idea of taking a “break” when you’re in love is what people still debate. That’s why the Friends break is so famous and continues to be talked about.
9. “How You Doin’?”
First Said In Season 4, Episode 13 “The One with Rachel’s Crush” – Joey
One of the most memorable scenes from Friends is Joey’s simple, yet effective, method for asking women on dates – it even became a famous line from the show! The scene happens when Rachel complains that Joshua hasn’t made a move, and Phoebe encourages her to ask him out herself. This leads Joey to share his go-to pickup line.
Joey’s catchphrase, “How you doin’?” from Friends became incredibly well-known throughout the series. He successfully used it on many occasions, and it almost always worked thanks to his confidence, charm, and the way he delivered it.
8. “Look At Me! I’m Chandler. Could I BE Wearing Any More Clothes?”
Season 3, Episode 2 “The One Where No One’s Ready” – Joey
By the third season of Friends, Chandler’s habit of emphasizing the word “be” or turning statements into questions was well-known. In a memorable episode, Ross has an important event at the museum, but everyone struggles to get there on time due to a series of funny accidents.
A silly fight over a chair escalates when Joey and Chandler argue, leading Joey to retaliate by raiding Chandler’s closet and wearing all of his clothes. He even delivers the line while imitating Chandler’s mannerisms, which is hilarious to watch.
7. “Joey Doesn’t Share Food!”
Season 10, Episode 9 “The One with the Birth Mother” – Joey
Joey is so passionate about food that he’d prefer to buy his date a separate meal rather than share an order of fries. By the tenth season of the show, his love of eating is a well-established part of his personality.
Joey went on a date with Sarah, a friend of Phoebe’s, but decided he didn’t want to see her again. Phoebe was curious about what happened, and Joey explained that Sarah had taken a fry from his plate, which led to him firmly stating he doesn’t share food. He even admitted he wouldn’t share with Rachel’s little daughter, Emma – he wouldn’t even give her a grape!
6. “I Don’t Even Have A Pla…”
Season 1, Episode 4 “The One with George Stephanopoulos” – Phoebe
In the episode “The One with George Stephanopoulos,” Phoebe stands out as a particularly charming and down-to-earth character. The episode centers around a bit of an identity crisis for many of the friends, sparked when Rachel reconnects with some old, affluent acquaintances. This throws Phoebe, Monica, and Rachel off balance.
Rachel brings down the vibe during a fun night with the girls, and Monica tries to cheer her up. When that doesn’t work, Monica turns to Phoebe, asking if she has any ideas. Phoebe responds with her signature carefree attitude, letting everyone know she’s okay with whatever happens.
5. “PIVOT! PIVOT! PIVOT!”
Season 5, Episode 16 “The One with the Cop” – Ross
Ross gets a new couch and doesn’t want to pay for delivery, so he convinces his friends to help him carry it up to his apartment by the stairs. Rachel starts helping, and Chandler quickly joins in, providing both muscle and his signature humor during the challenging lift.
Chandler is totally confused by Ross’s directions for moving the couch. Ross keeps repeating the word “pivot” like his friends don’t understand what he wants them to do. If they’d had more room, the couch probably wouldn’t have broken.
4. “It’s A Moo Point.”
Season 7, Episode 8 “The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs” – Joey
This beloved Thanksgiving episode from Season 7 focuses on Rachel reconnecting with Tag, her former assistant, who unexpectedly visits. She starts to develop feelings for him and waits for the right moment to act, now that he’s single.
While the women are talking, Joey interrupts with a surprisingly insightful question: does Tag even like Rachel? He argues that the whole conversation is a waste of time if Tag doesn’t feel the same way, jokingly calling it a “moo point” – like a cow’s opinion, which no one cares about. This silly explanation makes Rachel and her friends quietly chuckle.
3. “Oh, I’m Sorry. Did My Back Hurt Your Knife?”
Season 2, Episode 2 “The One With the Breast Milk” – Rachel
Okay, so Rachel finally realizes she has feelings for Ross – apparently Chandler let slip he’s been into her for ages! The timing, though? Terrible. Ross is currently in China, and wouldn’t you know it, he’s found a new girlfriend, Julie, who also happens to be a paleontologist. Watching them connect from afar is absolutely killing Rachel. And to add insult to injury, my friend Monica feels obligated to get along with Julie now that she’s dating Ross, which is just…awkward. It’s a classic love triangle setup, and honestly, it’s painful to watch unfold!
Rachel was understandably upset when she learned Monica had gone to Bloomingdale’s – her favorite store – with Julie. Monica tried to apologize, even meeting Rachel at the coffee shop and admitting she felt terrible. Rachel rightly pointed out that Monica had betrayed her trust.
2. “He’s Her Lobster!”
Season 2, Episode 14 “The One with the Prom Video” – Phoebe
Rachel learns from an old prom video that Ross secretly got ready to be her date when she didn’t have one, and she excitedly runs to kiss him. However, her actual prom date, Chip Matthews, unexpectedly arrives right then. This happens at a particularly awkward time, because Rachel had just told Ross she didn’t think they were meant to be together.
Phoebe explained to Ross that lobsters stay with one partner for life, and he actually believed it for a bit. Later, when Rachel learns Ross was upset about never having taken her to prom, she goes to comfort him, which perfectly sets up a funny comment from Phoebe.
1. “Welcome To The Real World. It Sucks! You’re Gonna Love It!”
Season 1, Episode 1 “The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate” – Monica
Monica’s warm reception of Rachel is a truly memorable scene for fans. When Rachel unexpectedly leaves her wedding, she seeks help from a childhood friend, Monica, who readily takes her in and provides her with a place to stay.
When Rachel is struggling to become independent, Monica offers tough love, pointing out that she needs to start supporting herself. During Rachel’s iconic scene where she dramatically cuts up her credit cards, Monica reminds her that while life can be difficult, facing those challenges is the only way to truly experience it – a lesson Rachel eventually understands throughout the series Friends.
