For a limited time, ending February 9th, 2026, Rematch has a new 1-on-1 mode. It’s played on a smaller field with small goals that frequently close. Although this mode isn’t ranked, players are eager to learn how to improve their 1-on-1 win rate. Because it’s so enjoyable, we hope Rematch brings this mode back again soon, maybe even permanently.
Rules For 1 v 1 Games In Rematch
First of all, it’s best to understand the rules, pitch layout, and nuances of 1 v 1 in Rematch.
- Matches last 3 minutes.
- If the game is tied when time runs out, the next goal wins.
- The Mercy Rule still applies, so going ahead by 4 goals will win the match.
- When you enter the opponent’s area, with or without the ball, the goal will slowly slide open.
- Exiting this area will cause the goal to slowly close.
- The goals take over 8 seconds to fully open to their maximum width.
- They take just over 4 seconds to fully close.
- There are no goalkeepers, but players can block shots with their bodies.
- After a goal, the player who conceded starts with the ball near the halfway line.
- The corners of the arena are beveled, allowing for another angle to bounce the ball off.
You can also play custom one-on-one games with friends in Rematch. Plus, you can practice by yourself on the smaller field using a custom game.
Tips & Strategies To Win More 1 v 1 Games In Rematch
Knowing the game Rematch well is the biggest advantage, but here are some specific tips to help you win one-on-one matches. These strategies should give you an edge in duels.
Pass To Shoot
Since the goals are small and hard to hit, it’s better to pass the ball instead of shooting directly. Passing keeps the ball low and makes aiming easier. You can even pass without looking at the goal – try passing from the side or behind, or using a backheel. Combining this with bouncing the ball off the walls can help you get into a good position to pass.
You can use the regular shot button when aiming low, and it lets you curve the ball. However, you’ll often score from close range, so passing is quicker because it doesn’t require a wind-up or needing to directly face the goal.
Wait Inside The Opponent’s Box With The Ball While The Goal Opens
When you enter the opponent’s side of the field, don’t immediately try to score. Slow down and wait for a clear opening to the goal. Likewise, when defending, don’t allow your opponent to create that same opportunity for themselves – pressure them to prevent them from setting up a good shot.
Don’t Give Up Chasing When Your Opponent Gets Past You
Normally in soccer, if an opponent broke through with an empty net, they’d score for sure. But in this game, the goals are closed, giving you a chance to catch up and slide tackle them from behind. Don’t hold back – there are no fouls!
This pitch is very short, giving you a good opportunity to succeed, particularly if you use a quick start or push yourself harder.
Smack The Ball Of Your Own Corner & Run Onto The Ball
If you receive the ball near your own goal, try hitting it off the angled corner of the field. This can send the ball quickly to the opposite end, surprising your opponents. Then, you can sprint forward and attempt to carry the ball towards the goal.
Use Skills & Rainbow Flicks To Get Past Your Opponent
Rainbow flicks can be unreliable in larger Rematch matches because while they might beat one opponent, another can quickly steal the ball. But in one-on-one matches, they’re a great way to create scoring opportunities. Ground skills are also effective and more valuable in this mode compared to others.
When playing defense, be ready for your opponent to attempt a rainbow flick. If they do, anticipate them quickly moving back to challenge for the ball.
Pass To Yourself Off The Walls
Using the walls to move around is common in Rematch, but it’s especially helpful when playing one-on-one since you don’t have teammates to rely on. Try passing the ball off the side walls to quickly get around your opponent, or kick it off the back wall to create an opportunity to score with a low header.
The beveled corner walls are another great option, as the angle can set you up square on goal.
When Defending, Don’t Rush In
If you’re defending near your own goal, don’t rush in for a tackle. It’s unlikely the attacker can score from that angle, but a missed tackle could create a scoring opportunity. Instead, be patient and wait for them to make the first move, then try to win the ball with a tackle or intercept the pass. Staying calm and letting them potentially make a mistake is often the best approach.
The Defensive Stance Is Key For Blocking Shots
Even though you can’t play as a goalkeeper, you can still block shots as any other player. Focusing on a strong defensive position is important – especially when facing the goal. If you maintain this stance with your back to the goal, you’ll be very difficult to score against up close.
