Despite a lack of recent updates, ConcernedApe is still working on Haunted Chocolatier, the highly anticipated sequel to Stardew Valley. Fans have been waiting over four years for the game, and the developer recently assured them that development hasn’t been canceled.
After the huge popularity of Stardew Valley in 2016, its creator, Eric Barone, revealed his next game, Haunted Chocolatier, in October 2021. Like Stardew Valley, it has a charming, pixelated art style. In Haunted Chocolatier, you’ll play as the owner of a chocolate shop, collecting ingredients and getting to know the villagers – including both the living and the ghosts! The game will share some familiar elements with Stardew Valley, such as building relationships with characters and engaging in combat.
Haunted Chocolatier is Taking Extra Time in Development, and ‘That’s Okay’
In a recent blog post, Barone reassured fans that development of Haunted Chocolatier is moving forward, despite a period of quiet updates. He wanted to address concerns and clarify that the game is still being made, even if it’s taking longer than some expected. The post aimed to correct misinformation circulating within the gaming community about the game’s status.

Some reports have claimed the game won’t be available until 2030, but Barone explained that his previous comments were misinterpreted. He clarified that last year, when asked if the game would be released within five years, he simply expressed hope that it would be – he never intended that as a firm release date. Barone doesn’t want to feel pressured by setting a specific date, stating that Haunted Chocolatier will be released when it’s fully finished.

The origin of this rumor is unknown, and Barone says it’s simply not true – he intends to finish Haunted Chocolatier. He clarified that both games are distinct projects built on different technology, making it impractical to combine them. He also confirmed that continued updates for Stardew Valley are planned because he has new ideas for the game, not because he’s lost interest in Haunted Chocolatier’s development.
Image via ConcernedApe The most recent blog post, published in early September 2025 before January, focused on the 1.7 update for Stardew Valley. Some fans were concerned that continued work on Stardew Valley might delay the release of Haunted Chocolatier, but the developer, Eric Barone, said any delay would likely be minimal. Barone originally created Stardew Valley entirely on his own, but he now works with a team of developers who help with updates – a system that’s been in place since the 1.3 update in April 2016. For now, fans will have to be patient while waiting for Haunted Chocolatier, and Barone expressed his gratitude for their understanding.
