Power Rangers is a very successful American show based on the Japanese series Super Sentai. It began almost twenty years after the original in the early 1990s and quickly became popular. The first version, called Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, is still a fan favorite. MMPR featured a group of memorable teenagers, though some were more developed characters than others.

Man, it was rough during the second season of the show. Three of the original Rangers couldn’t come to terms on new contracts and had to be replaced. A lot of us fans weren’t happy about it at first and unfairly took it out on the new guys. It’s probably not a big deal now, but I think all that negativity really impacted how the new Rangers were seen. Honestly, even thinking about the original team, it’s always a debate about who was actually the best Ranger, you know?

10. Aisha Campbell Suffered the Worst Out of the Add-On Rangers

Aisha Campbell became the second Yellow Ranger after Trini Kwan left the team. Similar to other rangers added later, she had a small part before officially becoming a Ranger. While Aisha is smart and skilled in martial arts, and did save a child, she doesn’t have as many notable accomplishments as Trini. Her skills are comparable to those of other team members.

The most striking thing about Campbell is her strong love for animals. While she’s much more outgoing than Trini, some people felt this wasn’t always a positive trait. Her bubbly personality sometimes clashed with Kimberly, who originally played the Pink Ranger. Had Campbell been introduced earlier in the series, she likely would have become the main Yellow Ranger.

9. Katherine Hillard Simply Couldn’t Compete With the Original Pink Ranger

Ketherine Hillard is the second person to play the Pink Ranger, and she’s held the role for a very long time – making her one of the most enduring Pink Rangers in the series. A common issue is that people often remember her more as the Zeo Pink Ranger than the original Mighty Morphin Pink Ranger. While she’s accomplished a lot and has impressive skills, it’s difficult to compare her directly to Kimberly Hart. However, Hillard generally proves to be a stronger performer in later seasons of the show.

It’s memorable that Rita Repulsa once transformed Hillard into a monster, marking her initial encounter with the Power Rangers. Hillard also develops a significant romantic relationship with team leader Tommy Oliver, eventually marrying him in the official storyline. While Hillard performs well as the Pink Ranger in general, she doesn’t quite reach the same level as the original Mighty Morphin Pink Ranger. Fortunately, she gets other chances to prove herself and stand out.

As a lifelong Power Rangers fan, I’ve always thought Adam Park was a solid Ranger, especially in later seasons. But honestly, he never quite reached the heights of his original run. A big part of that, I think, was when Tommy Oliver really stepped into the White Ranger role. Suddenly, Adam went from being second-in-command – a really important spot! – to third. It seems small, but a lot of us fans noticed and it definitely felt like a downgrade for his character.

Park continued to be part of the team, eventually becoming the Green Ranger – a role he excelled in compared to his earlier one. Later, he returned as the Black Ranger to lead a special team called the Retro Rangers during a mission called Operation Overdrive.

7. Trini Kwan is the Definitive Yellow Ranger

As a huge Power Rangers fan, it really bothers me that Trini Kwan, the first Yellow Ranger, doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. It’s sad that her character was even written out of the show with a permanent death – one of the few original Rangers to suffer that fate. And tragically, the actress who played Trini, Thuy Trang, passed away in a car accident, which was then reflected in the storyline. It was a really powerful, albeit heartbreaking, moment when her character sacrificed herself to save Billy, and it’s something I’ll always remember. She deserves to be celebrated as much as the other original Rangers.

She initially seemed a bit reserved, but viewers came to appreciate her gentle personality once she was gone. Throughout the series, she proved to be as clever as Billy. And recently, her on-screen daughter continued her family’s legacy by becoming the Yellow Mighty Morphin’ Ranger.

6. Rocky DeSantos is One of the Only Red Rangers to Not Lead the Team

Rocky DeSantos is the second Red Ranger, and uniquely, he never became a team leader. He shares traits with both Jason Lee Scott and Tommy Oliver. While some fans believe he excelled more as the Blue Zeo Ranger than as the original Red Ranger, Rocky is generally a more well-liked character overall.

While not the leader, the Second Red Ranger quickly became a fan favorite. The actor listened to feedback and worked hard to create a unique portrayal of the character. He later reprised the role in Power Rangers Ninja Steel as part of the Legendary Rangers, though some fans believe a return in the Blue Zeo Ranger suit would have been more fitting.

5. Billy Cranston Is One of the Smartest Rangers in the Franchise’s History

Billy Cranston is considered one of the most intelligent Power Rangers ever. Even after he stopped being a Ranger, he continued to assist Zordon with the Zords and technology the team relied on. He uniquely understood how Zord technology worked and could have achieved even more if he hadn’t been forced into retirement. While helping the Zeo Rangers, he was unfortunately infected with a virus that rapidly aged him, leading to his departure.

Originally, the writers planned for Billy to be revealed as the Turbo Phantom Ranger, but this idea was ultimately scrapped, leaving the Ranger’s true identity unknown. Despite this, many fans believe Billy was meant to be the Phantom Ranger, as that was the original intention of the show’s creator. Beyond his intelligence, Billy continues to be one of the most popular and well-loved Blue Rangers.

4. Zachary Taylor Is Jason Lee Scott’s Dedicated Second-In-Command

Zack Taylor is a memorable original Power Ranger, known for his strong personality. He was Jason Lee Scott’s reliable right-hand man and frequently stepped up to lead when Jason was hurt or unable to. Zack is a highly skilled martial artist who even developed his own unique fighting style. The actor who played Zack later reunited with many of his former teammates in the movie Power Rangers Once & Always.

Zack hasn’t been in as many follow-up movies or shows as some of his co-stars. This might actually be why he’s still so memorable – his limited appearances have kept him special. While it’s probably due to the terms of the actor’s contract, it also makes the character more intriguing.

3. Kimberly Ann Hart Is One of the Most Popular Pink Rangers in History

Kimberly Hart is remembered as one of the most popular Pink Rangers ever. She was a key part of the team for a long time, remaining even after many of the original members moved on. Though she returned for guest appearances after her time as the Pink Ranger, she never took on another Ranger role. She famously dated Tommy Oliver, the White Ranger, but their relationship ended with a breakup letter during the Zeo season.

Kimberly is remembered as one of the most recognizable Pink Rangers, despite a somewhat confusing romantic relationship with Tommy. She’s an incredibly talented gymnast, and often uses her skills in battles. She even managed to defeat a future Pink Ranger without using her powers, though she was under some kind of control at the time. For many fans, Kimberly is the definitive original Pink Ranger.

2. Tommy Oliver Is the Original Sixth Ranger, and a Fan-Favorite

Tommy Oliver is famous for being both the Green and White Power Rangers. He started as second-in-command to Jason, but later became the team leader when Jason left. Many fans consider him one of the best Rangers ever, largely because he was a Ranger for so long. While his accomplishments aren’t always highlighted, he did manage to defeat the entire team on several occasions when he was the Green Ranger.

Oliver isn’t just a team leader; he’s a brilliant strategist and a legendary figure. While many fans especially loved him during the Zeo season, being the first sixth ranger and a skilled fighter doesn’t necessarily make him the best Mighty Morphin Ranger. However, he’s definitely a strong contender and very close to being considered the greatest of the original team.

1. Jason Lee Scott Is THE Red Ranger and One of the Most Iconic in the Franchise

Jason Lee Scott was the very first Red Ranger and remains one of the most recognizable characters in Power Rangers history. Fans often mention him when discussing the show, and he’s consistently ranked as one of the franchise’s best leaders. While he returned for several episodes throughout the series, his appearances were less frequent than Tommy Oliver’s, making each of them feel particularly special.

Jason Lee Scott stands out not only as the best of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but as one of the most iconic Rangers ever. He essentially set the standard for what it meant to be a Power Ranger and was a fiercely committed teammate. Although he eventually left to participate in a Peace Conference, he’s made it clear he’s not finished with his role as a Power Ranger.
