Genjutsu is a remarkably powerful technique in the Naruto universe, capable of causing both mental and physical harm. While a fundamental type of jutsu, its full potential wasn’t truly understood until Itachi Uchiha appeared. Itachi demonstrated the devastating power of Genjutsu firsthand when he nearly killed Kakashi with a single attack.
I’ve always been fascinated by Genjutsu! It quickly became a go-to for some seriously powerful characters, and for good reason. These aren’t just illusions; Genjutsu users are incredibly skilled fighters who can completely turn a battle around in an instant. It takes real mastery to pull it off, learning techniques that can end fights unbelievably fast. There aren’t many who’ve truly perfected it, but I’m excited to share who I think are the absolute best Genjutsu masters out there.
6. Danzo Shimura
One of the Three Disciples Of Tobirama Senju
- Strongest Genjutsu: Izanagi
- Rank: S Rank
Danzo was a powerful elder of Konoha and the founder of Root, a clandestine organization. Though strong and influential, he was a ruthless man responsible for terrible acts, which ultimately led to his downfall. He specialized in a single, incredibly powerful technique called Izanagi, a Dōjutsu that allows the user to alter reality. While primarily used for defense, as demonstrated in his fight with Sasuke, Izanagi gave him immense control over what was real and what wasn’t.
5. Hashirama Senju
One Of The Strongest Characters In The Series

- Rank: A Rank
Hashirama was incredibly powerful, with offensive abilities that even Madara Uchiha found difficult to overcome. He was a rare individual, mastering both Wood Style techniques and Sage Mode. What many don’t realize is that he was also skilled in Genjutsu, creating illusions, and possessed a particularly strong one. This technique plunged opponents into darkness, filling them with a terrifying sense of dread, and proved so effective that even the Third Hokage struggled against it.
4. Shisui Uchiha
The Person Who Itachi Looked Up To
- Strongest Genjutsu: Kotoamatsukami
- Rank: S-Rank
Shisui was a highly respected and incredibly skilled ninja. Even Danzo, a powerful figure, recognized Shisui as the strongest Uchiha of his generation and felt threatened by him. Shisui was physically unmatched, consistently defeating Itachi in battles. His reputation was so intimidating that ninjas from other villages would actively avoid fighting him. His most powerful ability was Kotoamatsukami, a jutsu that allowed him to subtly control people’s minds without their awareness, making the manipulation nearly undetectable and impossible to resist.
3. Itachi Uchiha
The Genius Who Was A Kage Level Individual
- Strongest Genjutsu: Izanami, Tsukuyomi
- Rank: S-Rank
Itachi was a skilled ninja from the Uchiha clan who eventually joined the Akatsuki organization. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most powerful and feared criminals in the world, and was considered Akatsuki’s strongest member by many. Itachi specialized in using Genjutsu – powerful illusion techniques – in combat. His Dojutsu, or visual jutsu, were exceptionally strong, with Tsukuyomi being his most famous. Tsukuyomi trapped opponents in a deadly, unending illusion where Itachi could inflict continuous torment, with time moving much slower for the victim than in reality. He also possessed Izanami, another illusion technique that held people captive until they accepted their destiny.
2. Sasuke Uchiha
The Man Who Surpassed His Ancestors
Image from Studio Peirrot - Strongest Genjutsu: Tailed Beast Control
- Rank: Unknown Rank
By the series’ end, Sasuke had become incredibly strong, exceeding his brother’s abilities in every way. He was already a formidable fighter, battling alongside Naruto against devastating enemies. During the war, Sasuke received a significant power increase from the Sage of Six Paths, bringing him to the same level as Naruto. His visual jutsu, dojutsu, reached its full potential, even astonishing the Sage. This was demonstrated when he flawlessly controlled and captured all of the Tailed Beasts using his genjutsu.
1. Madara Uchiha/Kaguya Otsutsuki
Individuals Who Brought The World To Ruin
- Strongest Genjutsu: Infinite Tsukuyomi
- Rank: S-Rank
Watching the Naruto series, I was struck by how truly formidable Madara was – he absolutely earned his place as a major villain. He single-handedly tore through the entire shinobi alliance and ultimately unleashed the Infinite Tsukuyomi. However, it became clear that he wasn’t the original; Kaguya had done this centuries before, essentially shaping the entire ninja world as we know it. Their technique, the Infinite Tsukuyomi, is devastating – it impacts everything alive. What’s particularly terrifying is how difficult it is to stop; it traps people in a dream while draining their energy to feed this massive, otherworldly tree.
