Nioh 3 is coming to PlayStation 5 and PC on February 6, 2026, and a substantial demo is available now for those who want to play early. You can download the free demo from the PlayStation Store or Steam, and any progress you make will transfer to the full game when it launches next week.
Released in 2017, Nioh is an action role-playing game developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. Players take on the role of William Adams, an English sailor who became a samurai in 17th-century Japan. The game received excellent reviews, earning an 88% average score from top critics on OpenCritic. In 2020, Team Ninja released Nioh 2, a sequel that refined and improved upon the original. Both Nioh games have since become highly praised as some of the best games in the ‘Soulslike’ genre, so Nioh 3 has a lot to live up to.

A free demo for Nioh 3 is now available on PlayStation 5 as of January 29th. You can download it from the PlayStation Store and experience the entire beginning of the game, including a large open area and a challenging boss battle against a Yokai. Before you start, you’ll get to create your character, Tokugawa Takechiyo – a descendant of the legendary samurai Tokugawa Ieyasu. The character creation tool is quite detailed, allowing you to fully customize both his Samurai and Ninja looks.
After customizing their character, players will take on the role of Tokugawa Takechiyo and find themselves in a large, open world. Similar to Elden Ring, this world can be explored freely in any direction, allowing players to tackle challenges and objectives in the order they choose – a change from the more straightforward path of Nioh 1 and 2. Players will discover enemy camps to conquer, gather new gear, and battle a variety of Yokai creatures. Once they’re strong enough, they can head to Hamamatsu Castle Town – located in the center of the map – to face the demo’s final boss. Throughout the demo, players can try out the new Ninja and Samurai combat styles, a key feature of the sequel that allows them to switch between two distinct sets of moves.
If you beat the final boss in the Nioh 3 demo before February 15th, you’ll receive a special Twin-Snake helmet when the full game launches. After that date, the helmet will become a rare reward from the Jakotsu-baba boss. The good news is that anything you accomplish in the demo – including your character’s customizations – will transfer to the full game, so you can pick up right where you left off. Plus, the demo supports online play with up to three friends, letting you team up to fight enemies.
The latest demo for Nioh 3 is now available on PC through Steam, offering the same content and rewards as the PS5 demo. Keep in mind that progress from the demo will only carry over to the full game if you buy Nioh 3 on the same platform. For example, if you play the demo on PS5, you’ll need to purchase the PC version of Nioh 3 to continue your progress when the game releases on February 6th – you can’t transfer saves between platforms.
