TopMob has discovered that the team at Build a Rocket Boy, creators of MindsEye, are preparing to announce they’re ending their publishing agreement with IO Interactive.
People familiar with the upcoming announcement say the move is happening because Build a Rocket Boy wants to handle publishing its games itself. This will give them more control over their future, allowing for quicker decisions, easier communication, and a better experience for players.
The planned crossover between MindsEye and Hitman, first revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025, has been canceled. Build a Rocket Boy will now concentrate on improving MindsEye with additional fixes and new content.
Build a Rocket Boy made the decision to end the partnership, not IO Interactive.
Okay, so MindsEye launched on June 10th, 2025, and it really bombed with critics – like, only 6% of them recommended it. Steam reviews were pretty bad too, mostly negative or just okay. But here’s the weird part: a couple of weeks before release, the co-CEO of the studio, Mark Gerhard, went on Discord and claimed all the negativity wasn’t genuine. He said someone was paying people to trash the game and the studio on purpose. It was a pretty wild claim, honestly.
After launching their game, Build a Rocket Boy largely stayed quiet, concentrating on addressing issues and making improvements. According to reports, co-CEO Leslie Benzies informed staff a month after release that around 300 developers could lose their jobs, attributing the difficulties with the game and studio to both internal and external interference.
TopMob reached out to IO Interactive for a statement, but hadn’t received one before publishing this article. We will add any response we receive to this report.
