Terraria’s Summoning class has always felt a bit different from the others when it comes to fighting. It was added to the game much later than the other three classes, and while it can be strong, it hasn’t historically offered the same level of options and variety.
Patch 1.4.5 aimed to improve the Summoning class by adding a lot of new equipment, making it more balanced and enjoyable throughout the game – from the beginning to the end.
The Mushroom Staff is a new item that will give players a significant advantage before they enter Hardmode. Summoner class players will especially appreciate it, so get ready to use it!
Finding a Mushroom Biome

Before we start making the staff, we need to locate a large mushroom biome to collect the necessary materials.
When building a hellevator, you’ll likely encounter these areas, as they appear frequently throughout the game. The distinctive blue glow is a clear sign you’re nearby.
The mushroom biome is a great starting point for players because it has lots of Gold Chests and Life Crystals. While you’re there, be sure to collect as many glowing mushrooms as you can!
Also, focus on destroying as many mushroom trees as possible – they often drop valuable Mushroom Grass Seeds. Keep an eye out for mushroom houses while you explore, but be careful around them!
Crafting the Staff
To craft the staff, you’ll need any kind of anvil and the following items:
- 300x Glowing Mushrooms
- 5x Mushroom Grass Seeds
- 5x Tissue Sample / Shadow Scale (Depending on World Evil)
You’ll need to beat either the Brain of Cthulhu or the Eater of Worlds (or defeat some of their minions) before you can make this item. This generally happens around the middle of the early part of the game. But with a well-built arena and a good plan, you can take down these bosses pretty quickly.
Using the Mushroom Summons
Once you’ve hired staff, you can click to summon a Mushroom Boi – that’s actually its name! Combine this with Bee Armour for an additional two minions, and use Snapthorn to boost your minions’ damage and keep them under control.
The newest and most powerful upgrade for this staff is the Fabled Modifier, which was just added in this update.
Mushroom Bois automatically attack your enemies, dealing 5 damage. If you move far enough away, they’ll quickly fly towards your target and create a small explosion.

This weapon can be strong if used skillfully, but it soon becomes less effective compared to others. The game progresses quickly, and you’ll likely upgrade to the Hornet Staff and then the Imp Staff before you defeat the Wall of Flesh and enter Hardmode.
However, if you’re a big mushroom fan, then I’m sure you’ll find a way to make this work!
