Beyond Good and Evil 2 Director Issues Statement on Long-Awaited Game

Despite recent cancellations at Ubisoft, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in development. Creative director Fawzi Mesmar expressed both sadness for those affected and relief that the game’s future appears secure. Ubisoft has a clear plan for the future, and Beyond Good & Evil 2 doesn’t seem to be impacted by the company’s recent changes.

In January, Ubisoft stopped working on the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time along with five other games. This news, first reported by Jason Schreier, was quickly confirmed by Ubisoft itself. Despite these cancellations – which included a mobile game and four projects that hadn’t been publicly announced – Ubisoft is still developing many other games, with at least 23 franchises currently in the works across five different studios.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Creative Director Reassures Fans

Among the 23 Ubisoft franchises continuing development is Beyond Good & Evil. Ubisoft’s plans categorize it under a team focused on creating immersive fantasy worlds and story-rich games. Following a report about these plans, Michel Ancel, known as Mesmar, used LinkedIn to assure fans that Beyond Good & Evil 2 and its development team haven’t been significantly impacted by the recent changes at Ubisoft. He stated they are still dedicated to making an excellent game, and he thanked fans for their support after hearing about other Ubisoft game cancellations.

The first Beyond Good & Evil game came out in November 2003 and received mostly positive reviews. However, despite being released during the busy holiday season, it didn’t sell very well. Many believed this was due to a lack of effective marketing and the game’s unique concept: players control Jade as she investigates a possible alien danger using stealth, platforming, and by directing other characters. Despite the slow sales, the game won several awards, and a prequel was announced in 2008. We didn’t see much about it until the first trailer for Beyond Good & Evil 2 was shown at Ubisoft’s E3 presentation in 2017 – almost ten years after the original announcement.

Okay, so it’s wild to think Ubisoft has been talking about the Beyond Good & Evil 2 prequel for almost 18 years now – I remember hearing about it way back when! Honestly, a lot of fans were starting to lose hope after all this time, but they’re still working on it, which is a bit of a shock. Just two months before they announced it wasn’t one of the games getting cancelled, they posted a bunch of job openings at Ubisoft Montpelier – things like Lead Quest Designer, artists, and even network programmers. That’s what really got people talking, because it seemed like they were building in some kind of multiplayer aspect. But from what I’ve heard, it’s still going to be mostly a single-player game, which is what I’m hoping for!

I was so relieved to hear that our long-awaited game was still happening, and even more relieved that my team at Ubisoft was safe after the recent layoffs. But honestly, it’s hard to celebrate knowing so many talented people in the industry have been affected by the cancellation of those six games. I really think we all – including myself – need to do what we can to support them right now. It’s been a rough time for Ubisoft too, though – the stock price dropped almost 40% on January 22nd, and it hit a 15-year low after they announced the restructuring.
