Then, in 2023, they returned to the handheld market with the PS Portal.
Sony’s PlayStation Portal is a new device that lets players stream their PlayStation games to a handheld screen, letting them play on the go. Unlike the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck, it doesn’t play games directly – it connects to your existing PlayStation console using Remote Play. Since launching in November 2023, the Portal has been quite popular, becoming PlayStation’s best-selling accessory in 2024 and continuing to gain owners. Now, Sony might be working on a substantial update to the device.
Sony May Launch A New PS Portal Revision This Year
Okay, so I’ve been following the PlayStation news, and it looks like Sony’s working on a new version of the PlayStation Portal! A reliable insider, KeplerL2, is saying they’re upgrading the screen to OLED. That’s huge – the original has an LCD screen, and OLED will make everything look so much better. Right now, that’s the only confirmed change, but honestly, a better screen is a big deal for a handheld. Kepler doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but they’re saying we should expect it sometime in 2026. I’m already saving up!
Sony is planning a new PlayStation Portal device to launch after major improvements to the platform arrive in late 2025. In November, they added cloud streaming to the Portal for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, letting them play select games remotely. This update also included a redesigned home screen, 3D audio support, and improved accessibility features. As of January 2026, 7% of PlayStation 5 owners have purchased a PlayStation Portal, showing consistent interest in the device.
The OLED PS Portal Joins Another Rumored Sony Handheld
Beyond the rumored update to the PlayStation Portal, there’s talk of a completely new handheld gaming device from Sony. Leaks suggest this new console, designed to work with the upcoming PlayStation 6, could be even more powerful than the recently released ROG Ally X. Some reports indicate it might even connect to a TV like the Nintendo Switch, boosting performance for big-screen gaming. While Sony hasn’t confirmed anything, and the PS6 isn’t expected until at least 2027, the possibility of a more advanced handheld is generating excitement.
