Fans of the anime One Piece enjoy its heroes for their exciting fighting styles and impressive powers. The battles aren’t just visually appealing; they’re often deeply moving and can even change the direction of the entire story, impacting all the islands within the One Piece world – like when Luffy defeated Kaido or Blackbeard beat Whitebeard at Marineford. While story and emotional weight are the main focus of these fights, fans also love to analyze the strengths of the characters and keep track of things like win rates for the most powerful fighters.
While Monkey D. Luffy is a strong fighter, he doesn’t win every battle – he typically loses to tough opponents like Crocodile or Kaido once or twice before ultimately winning. This means some other characters in One Piece actually have better win records than him, including a couple of his own crewmates. In fact, six characters are known for winning far more often than losing, and two of them haven’t lost a single fight!
Vinsmoke Sanji Usually Wins as Luffy’s #3 Crewmate
Sanji Has Only Gotten Stronger Thanks to His Raid Suit

Sanji isn’t always the victor in One Piece, but he consistently ranks as the 6th strongest character. This is largely because he usually battles the third most powerful villain in each story arc. He’s generally considered the third strongest member of the Straw Hat crew, and consistently fights opponents of similar strength. While Sanji might not enjoy being slightly behind Zoro in terms of power, he remains a highly effective and intimidating fighter. As part of the Straw Hat’s ‘monster trio,’ he’s expected to perform at a high level, and it’s only within Luffy’s crew that he sometimes feels overshadowed.
Sanji is a remarkably skilled fighter, consistently improving his abilities through training, much like Luffy and Zoro. Despite not having a Devil Fruit, he’s incredibly effective in battle, relying on his martial arts, Haki, and the powerful Raid Suit. He proves that you don’t need supernatural powers to be a top-tier combatant – his victories over opponents like Mr. 2, Queen, Jabra, and Absalom demonstrate that perfectly.
Roronoa Zoro Vowed to Never Lose Again
Zoro’s Record Isn’t Perfect, But It’s Enough as Luffy’s #2 Crewmate

As the second strongest member of the Straw Hat crew and Luffy’s very first recruit, it makes sense that Roronoa Zoro has an incredible fighting record in One Piece. He’s even stated this himself, emotionally declaring he’ll never lose again. While that’s likely an exaggeration, aiming for a perfect win record is a huge ask for any action hero, and Zoro has come remarkably close. Though he hasn’t won every fight, his win rate is among the best in the entire series.
When you don’t count Zoro’s childhood training losses to Kuina, his win record is actually better than Luffy’s. After losing to the powerful Dracule Mihawk early on, Zoro has consistently won his battles. He’s proven his strength by defeating tough opponents like Mr. 1, Pica, and even King in the New World. Because of these victories and his incredible skill, many One Piece fans believe Zoro will either become as strong as or even surpass his long-time rival, Mihawk.
Kaido Has Scored Countless Victories and Rarely Loses to Anyone
Kaido’s Final Defeat Dethroned Him as an Emperor
Image via Toei Animation. Emperors are incredibly difficult to defeat, rarely losing to anyone. Matching an Emperor in battle is a huge challenge, and actually beating one is even harder – Kaido certainly isn’t worried about it. While he’s lost a few times, it’s unusual, and he seems untouchable by death. Known as the immortal monster of the New World, Kaido’s incredible stamina is the key to his many victories over the years. He also packs a serious punch, using his club, powerful jaws, and fiery attacks to overwhelm opponents.
Although Kaido wasn’t in many fights on screen, he usually won the ones he did participate in, establishing him as a nearly unbeatable opponent. He defeated Luffy multiple times, even while drunk, and briefly knocked out Luffy’s powerful Gear 4 form at Onigashima. Kaido is clearly very proud that it took the extraordinary Gear 5 transformation to finally defeat him, as no other power seemed capable of doing so.
Kuina Won Many Duels, But it Didn’t Matter to Her in the End
Kuina’s Death Made Her a Plot Device For Zoro
Image via Toei Animation. Kuina tragically passed away at just 13 years old, before she had the chance to become a fully-fledged swordswoman and compete against other fighters. Because of this, fans can only measure her skill by her success in practice matches, and surprisingly, she consistently outperformed even the strongest characters in the series, like Emperors and pirate captains! This isn’t about how powerful Kuina actually was, but about the fact that she was better than Zoro during their training. Their rivalry was deeply personal, and skill meant more than raw strength. In One Piece, becoming a truly memorable fighter or having a compelling story requires more than just being strong.
I remember watching Kuina and Zoro train – Kuina was incredible, winning every single one of their 2,001 matches! It really bothered Zoro, but Kuina had this worry that she wouldn’t be able to compete as a woman when they got older. She thought only men could truly become strong fighters. Looking back, it’s clear she was wrong – characters like Big Mom, Tashigi, Ulti, and Gunko all proved that women could be just as powerful. It’s a shame, though, that Kuina’s amazing skill was eventually used just as a way to explain why Zoro became so strong, almost downplaying how great she actually was.
Shanks Enjoys a Short But Perfect Combat Record in One Piece
Emperors Like Shanks Don’t Lose to Just Anyone
Image via Toei Animation. The powerful rulers of this world are incredibly difficult to overcome, and two of them are legendary for never having lost a battle. One is the red-haired Shanks, who can defeat even the toughest opponents with just a sword, one arm, and his special ability, Haki. He demonstrated remarkable self-control and kindness when bandits attacked Windmill Village, choosing to avoid unnecessary fighting. People admire characters like Shanks because they use their strength responsibly and prioritize peace when possible.
Shanks hasn’t fought many battles, but he’s never lost, giving him an unblemished record. While both Shanks and Mihawk remain undefeated, Shanks has fewer confirmed wins. This places him second in terms of win rate among all One Piece characters, but he wouldn’t mind at all. Shanks is known for being kind and values doing good deeds more than proving his strength.
Dracule Mihawk Has Notched Many Impressive Victories and Never Lost
That’s Why Mihawk is Zoro’s Top Rival in the Grand Line
Like Shanks, Dracule Mihawk is known for never losing a fight. He’s incredibly skilled, relying on his powerful Observation Haki and his massive sword, Yoru, to overcome any opponent. He’s so good, he once defeated Zoro easily, even with just a small knife! Zoro has become much stronger since then, but he still hasn’t been able to beat Mihawk’s perfect record. For Zoro, simply winning one fight against Mihawk would be a huge accomplishment and prove his growth.
What really fascinates me about both Shanks and Mihawk is how they both let their swordsmanship speak for itself – they’re incredibly powerful, legendary even, but they don’t need to brag about it. Though, Mihawk is a bit different. While Shanks would do something selfless like sacrifice an arm to save someone, Mihawk is more focused on his own satisfaction. He’s basically looking for a good fight, someone to challenge him as the world’s greatest swordsman, and he sees that potential in Zoro, which is awesome!
