Sony recently filed a patent for a new controller design that has the potential to significantly change the gaming experience and redefine what controllers are capable of.
A recently filed patent, dated January 27, 2026, details Sony Interactive Entertainment’s plans for a highly adaptable game controller. The patent explains the problems with current controllers, specifically how their fixed designs can be limiting. It points out that controllers aren’t always the right size for everyone and emphasizes the need for controllers that can be customized to fit different players. The document also mentions a desire to make it easier to adjust the positioning of controls like joysticks and D-pads.
This drawing illustrates a controller design that replaces traditional buttons with a customizable digital screen. It explores various arrangements for buttons and the directional pad (D-pad), and highlights that the controller can detect different types of presses – like taps and swipes – as commands.
Sony has patented a new and unique gamepad that doesn’t use traditional buttons. Instead, the entire controller is touch-sensitive, allowing players to use taps and swipes to control the game. The controller can even adjust its controls based on where your fingers are, creating a customized experience.

Sony Has Redefined Controllers in the Past
Sony has a long history of creating groundbreaking controllers. They pioneered the now-common dual analog stick design with the DualShock, which was already a significant improvement over the original PlayStation controller. They continued to push boundaries with motion control on the PlayStation 3, then added a touchpad to the PS4. Most recently, the PS5 controller introduced immersive features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
Although it’s uncertain if Sony will actually create this controller, the patent suggests they’re exploring options to make gaming more customizable and cater to individual player preferences.
Mobile gaming is becoming increasingly popular with younger players, meaning they’re already used to using virtual controls. However, this new technology might be a challenge for others to adapt to.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on the controller design! Are you interested in seeing virtual buttons become the new normal? Share your feedback on our official Discord server. And be sure to subscribe to our weekly newsletter for more updates.
