Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Shares Progress Report on Switch 2 Version

The director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth recently shared an encouraging update about bringing the game to the Nintendo Switch 2. Although Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was first released in early 2024 and the Switch 2 launched in late 2025, fans are still awaiting a version for Nintendo’s latest console.

The relationship between Final Fantasy 7 and Nintendo is a bit unusual. While the Final Fantasy series began on the Nintendo Entertainment System and continued on the Super Nintendo, Final Fantasy 7 marked the first game in the franchise to appear on a non-Nintendo console – the Sony PlayStation. This switch was mainly because the PlayStation used CDs, which offered more storage space and creative freedom. After initially skipping the original Nintendo Switch, Final Fantasy 7 Remake became available on the Switch 2 in January.

I was following the news from the Final Fantasy 7 Remake launch event for the Switch 2 at the Nintendo Store in New York, and Polygon had a chat with director Naoki Hamaguchi about the sequel. He said they’re basically building the next game for the Switch 2 from the ground up, but it’s still a work in progress. The team is really focused on polishing and optimizing everything. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Integrade has been getting awesome reviews on the Switch 2, which is great, but the sequel is much bigger and more ambitious, so it’s proving to be a bigger challenge for them.

As a huge fan, it’s awesome to hear Naoki say the team is so passionate about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth! He really seems confident it’ll be the experience we’ve all been waiting for when it lands on the Switch 2. He also hinted that they’re hoping to share more updates on how it’s coming along really soon. Plus, knowing the initial build for the Switch 2 is already done? That makes me think we might get the second game in the trilogy even sooner than expected, which is incredibly exciting!

So, I’ve been following the news about the Nintendo Switch 2, and apparently the specs aren’t quite as powerful as the other consoles out there. I’ve heard some developers are having a bit of a hard time getting games to run perfectly on it. But that hasn’t stopped everyone! Final Fantasy’s Future on the Nintendo Switch 2

Although Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will eventually be available on the Switch 2, fans are also wondering if other Final Fantasy games will come to Nintendo’s consoles. The developers have suggested that both Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 16 could potentially be released on the Switch 2, but there’s no official announcement yet. Many older, classic Final Fantasy titles have already been released on both the Switch and Switch 2 over the years.
