Bolt Action: Reimagining the Front Line
Slitherine and Frag Games have released a new behind-the-scenes look at their upcoming Bolt Action video game, titled “Reimagining the Front Line.” The game, based on Warlord Games’ popular WWII tabletop game, is currently in development and scheduled for release in 2026. The latest update highlights the game’s key features, including a true-to-the-tabletop “Six Orders” system, suppression mechanics, and realistic armor rules. The developers are focusing on creating a unique digital experience, rather than simply recreating the tabletop game – they want players to enjoy both formats separately. They’ve also confirmed the game will include a detailed Army Painter tool and a single-player campaign set during the Normandy campaign.
Tabletop Traditions Meet Digital Inovations
After reviewing the latest development update, it’s clear that Frag Games isn’t simply creating a digital version of the Bolt Action tabletop game. They’re actually developing a full video game built around the existing rules, which they intend to preserve.
What is staying the same:
- The Six Orders: Fire, Advance, Run, Ambush, Rally, and Down remain the tactical pillars of unit activation.
- The “Pinning” System: Unlike other RTS games where health is the only metric, Bolt Action focuses on suppression. Pinning units reduces their accuracy and forces “Order Tests,” making morale as important as firepower.
- Vehicle Facing: Positioning matters to vehicles as well. Hits to the side or rear armor will be significantly more devastating, rewarding flank maneuvers.
- Direct and Indirect Fire: Frag Games preserved the distinction between direct and indirect fires, featuring a “ranging” system where each successive shot gets closer to the target.
- Experience Levels: Squads can be Inexperienced, Regular, or Veteran, which directly affects their combat stats and morale.
- Squad Loadouts: Your forces will be as customizable as a physical army, from squad composition to vehicle upgrades and even visual customization. Speaking of which…

The “Army Painter” and Customization
As a huge board game fan, one of the coolest things about a game coming to PC is when they include a built-in painting system – remember how awesome that was in the original Dawn of War? Let’s be honest, most of us have a ton of miniatures we intend to paint someday, but never get around to. Thankfully, this digital version lets you customize how your armies look, which means one less “pile of shame” for me – and probably for you too!
