As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Ubisoft’s decision to remake Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag has left me both excited and a tad concerned. On one hand, Black Flag was a breath of fresh air in the Assassin’s Creed universe, offering an immersive pirate experience that remains unparalleled in the franchise. The prospect of revisiting Edward Kenway’s adventures with modern graphics is enticing, to say the least.
In the 2010s, gamers might not have anticipated Ubisoft to launch a high-quality pirate game within the Assassin’s Creed universe, but that’s precisely what they did with 2013’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Unlike earlier Assassin’s Creed games like Assassin’s Creed 2 and AC: Revelations which focused heavily on stealth, Black Flag adopted a more daring, swashbuckling style of gameplay. Indeed, Assassin’s Creed IV offered the quintessential pirate gaming experience, featuring naval combat, ship exploration, lost treasures, sea shanties, and other elements that any pirate game enthusiast would ask for. Despite its shift from the franchise’s usual formula, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was warmly received upon release and is still considered one of the best Assassin’s Creed games ever made.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited and puzzled at the same time. It appears that Ubisoft, a company I hold in high esteem, is rumored to be working on a remake of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, which came as quite a shock. You see, Ubisoft isn’t known for remaking games from their franchises, especially not the Assassin’s Creed series.
If the Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Remake Launches in 2025, It Could Face Stiff Competition
Black Flag’s Remake May Come Face-to-Face with Recent and Upcoming Pirate Games
While pirate video games may not be abundant, there’s been an increase in their release lately, such as Ubisoft’s “Skull and Bones” which came out in 2024. Originally envisioned as a spin-off of “Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag”, it eventually branched off into its own franchise due to delays. Initially slated for launch in 2018, the game was postponed several times before finally releasing this year to mixed reviews and poor sales. Nevertheless, it stands out as one of the more prominent pirate games recently.
As a hardcore gamer, I’m super excited about another pirate game on the horizon – “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii“. This spin-off from the critically-acclaimed Yakuza/Like a Dragon series by RGG and Sega is taking the franchise to uncharted waters. Although it’s fundamentally an RGG game, it draws inspiration from pirate games like “AC 4: Black Flag“. You can expect the traditional beat-em-up gameplay of the Like a Dragon series, but now with naval combat, managing your pirate crew, and upgrading your ship! “Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii” sets sail on February 28, 2025. With its launch date so near to the rumored “Black Flag” remake, it might just give the title a run for its money!
With AC Shadows on the Horizon, the AC 4 Remake Risks Launching in an Oversaturated Market
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to mention that there’s another title on my radar – “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”. This is the upcoming sequel from Ubisoft’s renowned series, and it was initially slated for release in November but has been pushed back to February 2025. The delay might not be great news for the rumored “AC 4” remake, as both could potentially compete with each other if they launch in the same year, eating into each other’s sales.
It appears Tom Henderson’s latest report indicates that the release of the new Black Flag may be delayed until 2026. This potential delay might work in favor of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remake, as it would provide the game with a later launch date, offering it more time to gain momentum and make a stronger impact upon release.
