The Last of Us Season 3 Could Be The Show’s Final Run

The popular HBO series, The Last of Us, might conclude after its planned fifth season, which is now expected to arrive in 2027. This information was shared by Casey Bloys, the CEO of HBO, in a recent interview. The show premiered in January 2023 to widespread acclaim, earning numerous awards and leading to the development of a second season.

The show’s second season concluded in May 2025 with a dramatic cliffhanger, hinting at a future storyline told from the point of view of Abby, a key character from the 2020 video game, The Last of Us Part II. Because Abby’s story largely concludes the game’s narrative, this could potentially be the end of the TV series, as there wouldn’t be any further source material to adapt.

Is The Last of Us Finishing After Season 3?

The third season of The Last of Us might be the last, as it would likely cover all the story content currently available from the original game. Once season three airs, the show will have adapted all existing source material.

Released in 2020, The Last of Us Part II is a story about revenge and a relentless chase across a large landscape. The game uniquely presents the story from two sides: you experience it through Ellie, who is driven by vengeance, and Abby, who is fighting to protect her loved ones.

Season two of The Last of Us covered Ellie’s story, but Abby’s side of events hasn’t been fully explored yet, and that will be the focus of season three.

HBO’s CEO recently hinted that season three of The Last of Us might be its last. When questioned about reports that the next season would conclude the series, Casey Bloys responded:

That’s a good point, but the showrunners will ultimately make those decisions. You should ask them directly.

The recent announcement briefly confirmed what many suspected all along. Without venturing into new territory outside of the video game storylines, there’s simply no more content to create for a potential fourth season of The Last of Us.

The show’s second season received strong criticism due to some of its storylines and continued issues with the cast, which negatively impacted its overall success.
