YouTube Gaming’s Viewership Down 27% in Q3 2024

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tad nostalgic about the good old days when YouTube Gaming was the undisputed king of content creation. But alas, even the mighty have fallen, or in this case, experienced a 27% dip in viewership – a decline that seems rather hard to swallow given the plethora of events that should’ve boosted their numbers.

According to a report from Streams Charts, YouTube Gaming experienced a significant decrease in viewership throughout Q3 of 2024. Contrary to expectations, the popular content platform witnessed a 27% decline in viewership, even though numerous events took place during that period that were anticipated to increase viewer numbers.

There was also a 13.6% downturn in viewership across YouTube Live, despite a whopping 13.1 billion watch hours being recorded in Q3 2024.

Changing Landscape

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that despite seeing a dip in viewership during Q3, YouTube remains unrivaled as the kingpin of content creation. According to the recent report by Streams Charts, YouTube holds approximately 66.7% of the market share when it comes to content distribution – a testament to its dominance and enduring popularity among creators and viewers alike.

In comparison to YouTube, Twitch holds a market share of 19.1%, demonstrating the ongoing success of YouTube within the rapidly expanding video streaming sector.

2024 has seen an astounding surge for Kick and AfreecaTV platforms, with Kick reporting a remarkable 15.6% increase in viewing hours from July to September! It seems that despite some criticism, it’s now the third most preferred streaming and content-sharing platform among many of us.

In the exciting world of Q3 2024, I was part of the massive audience who collectively consumed an astounding 19.7 billion hours of content! This number keeps climbing as we’re treated to a jam-packed esports calendar, with iconic games like League of Legends, Free Fire, and PUBG taking center stage.

It’s understandable why so many individuals across the globe are finding success in streaming and content creation as a career, given the increasing popularity of this medium over traditional cinema. With sales of cinema tickets decreasing while viewership numbers on streaming platforms escalate (generally speaking), it’s evident that today’s youth prefer to consume content from their favorite creators on their mobile devices rather than visiting a movie theater.
