As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into every nook and cranny of the franchise, I can confidently say that the Tzenkethi have always piqued my curiosity like no other alien race. With their brief yet intriguing mentions in Deep Space Nine and tantalizing glimpses in various comics and novels, they’ve remained an enigma wrapped in a riddle, shrouded in mystery.
Star Trek is recognized for its diverse array of alien species. From the logical Vulcans to the fierce Klingon warriors, and the Trill with their symbionts, Star Trek’s universe teems with intriguing extraterrestrial beings each possessing unique aesthetics and cultures. A hundred and fifty planets, including these aliens and humans, are part of the Federation. The Klingons and the Federation once maintained a Cold War stance, but later united against the oppressive Dominion. Yet, every strong ally breeds its own adversaries. The Borg, for instance, are formidable in their destructive or assimilative nature, while the Cardassians exhibit xenophobia and cruelty. Nevertheless, there are many more alien races hinted at or briefly mentioned across the franchise that remain unexplored onscreen.
Despite not appearing officially on screen, the Tzenkethi have left a significant impact on the lore of Star Trek. The first mention of them was in Deep Space Nine Season 3, Episode 26 “The Adversary”. In this episode, newly-promoted Captain Sisko is contacted by someone he believes to be Ambassador Krajensky, who informs him about a coup within the Tzenkethi. Krajensky requests Sisko’s presence to demonstrate the Federation’s commitment to safeguarding its colonies near the Tzenkethi homeland from those now in power. This brief interaction suggests that relations between the Federation and the Tzenkethi are strained, but what exactly has caused this tension? It may be worth noting that viewers have not actually seen the Tzenkethi on screen; their appearance is only hinted at through dialogue.
The Federation and the Tzenkethi Have Warred Before
In the mid-24th century, prior to the timeframe of both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, the Tzenkethi and the Federation were historical enemies. Onboard the USS Okinawa, Captain Leyton and Commander Sisko encountered the Tzenkethi on several occasions. One such instance involved Leyton chasing Tzenkethi raiders through an asteroid belt against Sisko’s objections. Although Sisko initially questioned Leyton’s decision as a risky move, he later acknowledged that it was the right choice to pursue them. The Tzenkethi are a civilization capable of warp travel, and they have colonies on various planets, including M’kemas III. They are located near Federation colonies and are governed by an Autarch, who seems to hold the power equivalent to an emperor. Their past conflicts were brief or minor, as they aren’t frequently mentioned. However, a shapeshifter, disguised as Krajensky, attempted to provoke another war in “The Adversary,” suggesting that another potential conflict could be even more devastating with severe consequences.
What Do They Look Like?
There’s been much discussion about how the Tzenkethi, who haven’t been officially depicted on screen, should look. Robert Hewitt Wolfe, co-writer of “The Adversary,” expressed his vision as that of heavily armored lizard aliens. However, non-canonical sources have described them as feline-like creatures, much like the Kzinti, or tall, attractive humanoids. The IDW Star Trek comic series leans towards Hewitt Wolfe’s concept, depicting them as heavily armed dinosaurs. On screen, they are portrayed as brutal, as violent as the Klingons without their code of conduct, making them formidable enemies. Star Trek Online comes closer, representing the Tzenkethi as bipedal lizards with four arms. A fan theory suggests that the Tzenkethi might have appeared in an episode of Discovery, specifically Season 5, Episode 3 “Jinaal,” where Ambassador Saru meets with representatives, one of whom could potentially be a Tzenkethi. However, it’s more likely that they haven’t made their canonical on-screen debut yet. A Star Trek: Picard research assistant recently hinted on Twitter that the ambassador seen in that episode might actually be an updated version of the Selay, rather than the Tzenkethi.
Star Trek boasts an expansive and intriguing alien landscape, where every race – whether they’re allies or adversaries – adds depth and fascination to the cosmos. The Tzenkethi are no different; they’ve had past conflicts with the Federation, leaving their animosity unresolved, making them intriguing antagonists. Despite being featured in comics and books, the Tzenkethi have yet to be showcased on TV or film, which fans eagerly await since their introduction on DS9. For now, these enigmatic aliens will continue to captivate us with their elusive nature.
