Boruto Uzumaki, the main character of the Boruto series, is a somewhat divisive choice when people discuss the best anime protagonists. He’s often criticized for seeming overpowered without earning it, for his inconsistent development as a character, and for not being particularly unique. It’s understandable why many fans are reluctant to consider him among the all-time greats – he still has a lot to prove to measure up to other popular heroes.
Boruto Uzumaki is still developing as a compelling lead character, and many other anime protagonists are more well-rounded, have stronger personalities, and face greater obstacles in their journeys. These characters have truly captured the hearts of fans in a way that Boruto is still working towards.
7. Izuku Midoriya
Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia is a hugely popular anime hero. Many viewers find him inspiring because he deals with self-doubt in a way that’s easy to understand. People also like him because he’s kind, humble, and always determined to protect everyone, even those who aren’t necessarily good people.
Although My Hero Academia Season 8 has concluded, it clearly demonstrated what makes Deku such a compelling anime hero. He proved that anyone can become a hero, regardless of where they start, and that greatness isn’t something you’re born with – it’s earned.
6. Naruto Uzumaki
Naruto is considered one of the greatest anime heroes ever, and it’s understandable why fans struggle to embrace Boruto as his replacement. Naruto’s journey as an underdog is incredibly captivating, and his battles feel more impactful and high-stakes than Boruto’s. He’s a truly unique character who’s hard to follow.
Fans also noticed a difference in how Naruto and Boruto gained their abilities. Naruto had to work incredibly hard and overcome huge challenges to unlock his powers. Boruto, on the other hand, seemed to receive powerful techniques easily, without much struggle. It often felt like the series was giving Boruto these abilities simply to make him seem stronger than Naruto, and they didn’t always feel deserved.
5. Monkey D. Luffy
From the start of One Piece, Luffy had a firm goal: to become the next Pirate King. Everything he does – every adventure, fight, and obstacle – brings him closer to achieving that dream. In contrast, Boruto lacks that same clear direction, which makes it difficult for viewers to really connect with his motivations and aspirations.
Luffy has a natural charisma that draws people to him and motivates them to support his goals. His positive attitude and desire for freedom are contagious, inspiring his crew and others to believe in his dream and give their best.
4. Son Goku
Son Goku might seem naive and strong, but he’s become a true legend. He’s far more popular and interesting than most other anime heroes, like Boruto. Every battle he fights feels important, whether he’s facing threats to the world, the universe, or even multiple dimensions. His transformations are instantly recognizable, and fans still eagerly anticipate seeing him grow even stronger.
Goku is coming back in the new anime movie, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, promising more of the exciting fights, funny moments, and incredible strength that have made him an inspiration to so many fans worldwide.
3. Eren Yeager
Eren Yeager, the main character in Attack on Titan, gained the ability to transform, which dramatically changed the world around him. Although he starts as a seemingly simple character, Eren becomes incredibly complex, making him a much more compelling figure than Boruto Uzumaki. What begins as a quest for revenge eventually evolves into something far bigger, as Eren embodies both freedom and devastation.
Eren’s decisions in the final arc of Attack on Titan are still widely debated, but many viewers appreciate how powerfully his choices resonated and the difficult moral questions they raised. Driven by a desire to save his friends and eliminate the Titans, Eren acted in surprising ways that impressed many with his unwavering determination.
2. Gabimaru
The battles of Gabimaru the Hollow on the dangerous island of Shinsenkyo are incredibly exciting and keep viewers gripped. Unlike in Boruto, where characters often survive even serious injuries, losing a fight in Gabimaru’s world means certain death, making each fight feel much more impactful.
Gabimaru lives with constant fear, hunted by both terrifying creatures and relentless pursuers – including executioners and other assassins. This creates incredible tension, as he can’t trust anyone, because even those who appear friendly might be trying to kill him.
Gabimaru fights not only to survive, but to return to his wife, safe and sound. This deep love and loyalty are what truly define him as a character, making it easy for the audience to empathize with his journey.
1. Rimuru Tempest
Rimuru Tempest is the central character in the hit anime That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Similar to Boruto, he’s incredibly powerful and can absorb others to increase his strength. But what makes Rimuru especially interesting is his intelligence – he frequently uses smart tactics to either overcome enemies or build alliances.
I’m really fascinated by how Rimuru handles things! He doesn’t just rush into battles relying on brute force; he’s always thinking, analyzing, and coming up with clever solutions. It’s so different from Boruto, who tends to act on impulse. What really strikes me, though, is how likeable Rimuru is – people naturally trust him. And because of that, his allies are completely on board with his plans, showing a level of loyalty and teamwork that’s amazing to see. He genuinely inspires people!
