The Marines in One Piece are presented as a powerful force known for strict discipline and unwavering loyalty to the Five Elders. While characters like Admirals Kizaru and Akainu perfectly represent these qualities, not all Marines do. A few have been removed from the organization, sometimes because they chose to leave its harsh environment. Because so few Marines have ever left, those who do are particularly noteworthy.
It’s interesting that being discharged from the Marines didn’t automatically make someone a good guy. While a few former Marines became heroes – often because they lost trust in the World Government – others simply traded one form of wrongdoing for another. Although ex-Marines and officers aren’t common in One Piece, those who do appear often become some of the most important and unforgettable characters.
Monkey D. Dragon Parted Ways With the Marines After God Valley
Dragon’s Rescue of Shamrock and Shanks Changed His Worldview

Luffy’s father, Monkey D. Dragon, is well-known as a former Marine who left under unusual circumstances. What makes his departure unique is that his own father, Garp, actually helped him leave peacefully. Ironically, Dragon then became the leader of the Revolutionary Army, an organization dedicated to opposing the Marines he used to be a part of.
Dragon used to fully support the revolutionaries’ cause, but recent events in the One Piece manga revealed a turning point. He became disillusioned after learning the horrific details of the God Valley Incident – the senseless hunting of innocent people. He couldn’t accept such cruelty, especially after a mother pleaded with him to save her son, Teech. In fact, Dragon was also responsible for rescuing the twin brothers, Shamrock and Shanks.
Jaguar D. Saul Was a Giant Marine Who Saved Robin’s Life
The Will of D. and the Marines Are Incompatible

Interestingly, some individuals with the legendary “Will of D.” actually joined the Marines. This is ironic because the Will of D. marks someone as an enemy of the “gods” who control the World Government and the Navy, leading to figures like Saul and Dragon being expelled. In Saul’s case, he didn’t initially leave the Navy because of the events at God Valley, but rather during the destruction of Ohara when a Buster Call was ordered.
Nico Robin was saved as a child by the giant Saul, who bravely protected her. It was incredibly lucky he survived! They were separated for years, but recently reunited on Elbaph, sharing a very emotional meeting. Saul is special – one of the few giants known to carry the mysterious ‘Will of D.’ In fact, Imu revealed that everyone on Elbaph has it. This likely explains why Saul defied the Navy and was exiled for saving people like Robin.
Admiral Aokiji Quit After He Battled Akainu at Punk Hazard
Aokiji Has Sunk to the Level of the Blackbeard Pirates
Image via Toei Animation. It used to appear that the Admirals were the Navy’s most loyal members, but that’s changed. While Kizaru and Akainu still completely follow Imu’s orders, Aokiji is different. He and Akainu became enemies after the fight at Marineford, and Aokiji lost to him at Punk Hazard. It’s clear Aokiji was angry and upset when his career ended, especially after barely surviving.
It’s ironic that Aokiji, a former Marine, ended up joining the Blackbeard Pirates – a group completely opposed to everything he once stood for. The Blackbeard Pirates are a chaotic and rebellious crew who, like their captain and the legendary Rocks D. Xebec, actively fight against the World Government. And it seems Aokiji is genuinely committed to this new path, with no indication he’s planning a double-cross. Because of this, the Marines have no chance of ever welcoming him back, no matter how powerful his ice abilities are.
Captain Morgan Was Hated By His Own Men
Morgan Remains at Large to This Day
Image via Toei Animation. Captain Morgan was one of the very first Marines shown in the story, appearing in the Romance Dawn Saga. He represented the Navy’s early habit of being cruel and unfair, which ultimately led to his downfall. As the tyrannical ruler of Shells Town, Morgan quickly became an enemy of Luffy, who valued freedom. When Morgan was defeated, his own soldiers celebrated, proving how disliked he was.
While some former Marines faced consequences for their actions, Morgan managed to avoid punishment. He was arrested and scheduled for trial, but he escaped when Garp fell asleep, and has been a fugitive ever since. The story of One Piece often revisits unresolved plot points, but because Morgan isn’t very powerful or influential, he’ll probably stay out of the main action for the rest of the series.
Sentomaru Shifted His Allegiance to the Straw Hats
Sentomaru Became One of Luffy’s Best Allies at Egghead Island
Image via Toei Animation. Sentomaru was first seen as an opponent to the Straw Hat Pirates because he commanded the Pacifistas. While he participated in the battle at Marineford, fans now see him as a positive figure. He recently appeared in the Egghead Island arc as an ally to the Straw Hats, choosing to side with them instead of the Marines because he believes it’s the right thing to do.
Sentomaru briefly held off the Marines while trying to protect the Pacifistas on Egghead, but his efforts were limited. He managed to escape the intense battle, even with powerful figures like the Five Elders present, though he barely made it out alive. Now that he’s broken away from the Marines, who are becoming more ruthless, Sentomaru needs to be constantly vigilant.
Caesar Clown Went Rogue on Punk Hazard With His Experiments
Caesar Was Too Cruel For Even the World Government
Image via Toei Animation. It’s a disturbing sign of Caesar Clown’s character that he was discharged from the Marines for his immoral behavior. As many One Piece fans know, the Navy and its leaders often allow or even support harsh actions, like what Saturn did to Bartholomew Kuma. However, Caesar managed to cross a line that even they considered unacceptable.
Caesar Clown became a dangerous outlaw after continuing his cruel and unethical experiments on Punk Hazard. Despite leaving the Marines, he still had people working for him and plenty of unwilling test subjects, making him a significant threat to the Straw Hat Pirates, Trafalgar Law, and Smoker when they confronted him.
Dr. Vegapunk Joined Luffy’s Side to Resist the Five Elders’ Evil Ways
Dr. Vegapunk Gave His Life to Defy the Navy and World Government
Image via Toei Animation. Like Sentomaru and those with the ‘D’ initial, Dr. Vegapunk left the Navy for noble reasons – he believed in doing what was right. While he’s a scientist who operates outside the law, similar to Caesar Clown, their motivations are completely different. Vegapunk actually cares about others, and that’s why he strongly opposed the shady agreement Jaygarcia Saturn made involving Kuma and Bonney. He supported Kuma then, and now he’s throwing his support behind Luffy.
Dr. Vegapunk intentionally turned against the Navy and Marines to save the world from the danger posed by Imu. He sacrificed his life to share a crucial warning – an impending global flood – with everyone. Though he’s no longer with us, Dr. Vegapunk felt his actions were worthwhile, and he left behind his satellites to continue his important work.
