Square Enix Is Bringing a New Version of Final Fantasy 7 to Steam

The original version of Final Fantasy 7 on Steam, released in 2013, will be removed soon. Square Enix announced in January that it’s being replaced with an updated version. If you already own the 2013 version, you’ll receive the new one as a free update.

Square Enix announced an updated version of Final Fantasy 7 as they celebrated its 29th anniversary. Originally released on PlayStation in 1997, the game was first brought to Windows in June 1998. The initial PC version proved so successful that its code was used as the basis for future versions, including the Steam release in 2013. This Steam version then formed the foundation for the current console ports, allowing a new generation of players to enjoy this classic Final Fantasy title.

Steam Is Getting a Re-Release of Final Fantasy 7 Soon

Square Enix is updating the Steam version of Final Fantasy 7. The current 2013 version will eventually be removed from Steam, but a new version with some currently unknown features will take its place. Players who already own the 2013 version will get the update for free. However, save files won’t transfer over – you’ll need to start a new game when the updated version releases in 2026. Your existing save data from the 2013 version will still be available, though.

The original version of Final Fantasy 7 on Steam will be renamed Final Fantasy 7 – 2013 Edition, while the new version will just be called Final Fantasy 7. If you already own the game, you’ll still have access to both versions and can download the 2013 version whenever you want. However, it’s currently unknown if existing Steam mods will work with the new version, so mod users may need to wait for more details. Good news for those interested in the re-release: the 2013 edition is currently on sale for $4.79 on Steam until February 4th.

Final Fantasy 7 Remains Firmly in the Spotlight

As a huge Final Fantasy 7 fan, I’m so excited about everything Square Enix has planned! It’s not just the original game coming to Steam – they’re bringing Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade to the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S in January 2025, which has everyone buzzing about the next part in the Remake series. We don’t know much about it yet, but the game director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has said they’re still building it with Unreal Engine 4. They’ve even decided on a title for the third chapter, but they’re keeping it a secret for now – seriously, the wait is killing me!

The discussion about the original Final Fantasy 7 and its modern remakes is often heated, but it’s clear the game has had a huge impact on popular culture. Players are now curious to see what new content and improvements the updated version on Steam will bring.
