The Tragedy at Summerhall remains one of the biggest mysteries in the world of Game of Thrones. Details are scarce, but it’s known that magic played a role, and Rhaegar Targaryen was born amidst the flames. King Aegon V Targaryen and his knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, both perished in the fire. Our only account of the event comes from Maester Corso, who briefly documented it in a letter shortly before his death.
Dragonblood collected around seven eggs, intended as offerings to the seven gods. However, the king’s religious advisor had cautioned against involving fire mages, and the resulting wildfire quickly spiraled out of control. The flames became enormous and burned with such intensity that many perished, though the bravery of the Lord Commander helped to contain the disaster.
Even though the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms take place fifty years before the tragic fire at Summerhall – where the characters Dunk and Egg will eventually die – the prophecy in Episode 3 seems to have revealed their destinies and confirmed a popular fan theory: Egg will become another Targaryen king driven to madness, ultimately causing the Tragedy at Summerhall.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Confirms Egg’s Fate in Episode 3’s Prophecy
Episode 3 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms added a new scene where Dunk and Egg encounter a fortuneteller. She predicts Dunk will achieve “great success and be richer than a Lannister.” While that claim seems far-fetched, fans of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire know Dunk eventually becomes the most celebrated Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. True to his character, Dunk simply dismisses the prediction and asks the fortuneteller to look into Egg’s future instead.
You will become king, but your reign will end in a fiery death. Your body will decay, and those who know you will celebrate when you are gone.
Egg’s prophecy is much more unsettling, essentially revealing the end of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ last season. It states Egg will become king – known as Aegon the Unlikely – and will die in the fire at Summerhall. While these events aren’t new to fans, the detail that everyone who knows him will rejoice at his death is significant. This isn’t a minor detail, especially given the episode’s focus on Raymun Fossoway warning Dunk about the dangers of Targaryen insanity. Since Egg was a popular king, particularly with the common people, for everyone to welcome his death suggests he committed a terrible act – and that act likely occurred at Summerhall.
The Tragedy at Summerhall Was a Dragon Revival Ritual Gone Horribly Wrong

The books show that towards the end of his rule, Egg becomes fascinated with dragons, researching Valyrian history and even traveling to Asshai to uncover more about them. Because Summerhall was destroyed by fire, killing both Dunk and Egg, many fans believe Egg was attempting to hatch dragon eggs using magic—a ritual that went wrong and likely involved sacrifices. A recent prophecy in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms supports this theory.
Rhaegar’s birth coincided with the disastrous fire at Summerhall. Some believe this fire involved a ritual sacrifice, and interestingly, it mirrors the circumstances of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons being born. In the first season of Game of Thrones, Daenerys burns her husband, Drogo, while he’s still alive, intending to join him in death. However, she survives the flames, and her three dragons are born from this act of sacrifice. The magic was likely amplified by Mirri Maz Duur, who was chanting a spell as she burned.
As a lifelong fan of the series, I’ve always been fascinated by Rhaegar Targaryen. They call him the Last Dragon, and he’s Jon Snow’s father – many believe Jon is actually the legendary ‘Prince That Was Promised.’ While Rhaegar himself couldn’t bring dragons back, his actions somehow led to the birth of the man who would ultimately unite Westeros against the Night King and, eventually, stop Daenerys when she lost her way. It seems likely that Rhaegar intended to sacrifice his own baby – the animosity surrounding his death suggests that’s what happened. As Stannis Baratheon so eloquently put it, a true sacrifice isn’t easy, and it’s hard to imagine Rhaegar willingly putting his child in harm’s way for anything less.
Egg May Have Had a Good Reason to Burn Down Summerhall
The fire at Summerhall was probably a mistake by Egg, but he wasn’t necessarily trying to cause harm. King Aegon V, popular with the common people, had alienated the nobility with policies that favored them. It’s possible Egg tried to bring back dragons to create a source of power that would protect his pro-commoner reforms after he was gone. However, the prophecy suggests even the common people eventually turned against Egg, hinting that he might have been willing to sacrifice his own family to damage the Targaryen name.
The show House of the Dragon revealed a prophecy about the coming Long Night – an invasion of ice creatures called the White Walkers – and stated that the realm needed to be ruled by a Targaryen to survive it. By the time of Game of Thrones, this prophecy had been forgotten, and it’s suggested it disappeared with a character named Egg. Egg tried to hatch dragons to prepare for the Long Night, but his attempt failed. Future seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will show Dunk and Egg visiting the Wall, meaning Egg likely learns about the White Walkers before becoming king. However, Egg is ultimately remembered as a villain responsible for the unnecessary death of a great knight, regardless of his reasons.
