As a seasoned gamer and horror enthusiast hailing from the misty lands of Transylvania, I must say these games have sent shivers down my spine in the most delightful way possible! Let me tell you about my personal favorite among them all, the remake of Resident Evil 4 from 2023.
In games like Silent Hill 2 or Alien: Isolation, the main character often finds themselves in terrifying scenarios that aren’t typically associated with them. On the other hand, certain video games compel players to assume roles where their characters, such as members of the police force, are expected to confront danger head-on instead of avoiding it.
Choosing a character like a beat cop, detective, or FBI agent as the main character offers a unique perspective on the unfolding events. Instead of just surviving against monsters and murderers, playing as a law enforcer introduces an element of duty and responsibility, while also presenting diverse narratives and characters that are distinct from traditional video game protagonists.
7 Deadly Premonition
Open-World Horror Game As An FBI Agent
As a seasoned gamer, I’d say I’m drawn to the eerie, suspenseful vibe reminiscent of the TV series “Twin Peaks” in the game “Deadly Premonition“. I play as FBI agent Francis Morgan, diving deep into an enigmatic murder case. Unlike many horror games that follow a single, predetermined route, this one offers me the freedom to roam around in an expansive open world, making each investigation feel uniquely my own.
In my experience, playing Deadly Premonition was like stepping into a captivating open-world mystery. I could roam freely, take on missions, customize Morgan’s appearance with various cosmetics, and manage essential aspects of his life, such as ensuring he ate well and got enough rest to maintain his health. The game also introduced supernatural foes and a chilling adversary known as the Raincoat Killer, setting it apart from most other games in the gaming landscape.
6 Saw
Detective Tapp Returns In A Sequel To The Movie
- Developer: Zombie Studios
- Release Date: October 6, 2009
- System: Xbox 360, PS3, PC
- Genre: Survival Horror
Few games inspired by horror films tend to be excellent, but Saw stood out as an exceptional exception within that genre. This was partly due to the involvement of those who worked on the Saw films in creating the game, with Tobin Bell reprising his role as John Kramer (also known as Jigsaw). Unlike other games that attempt to mirror the movie’s events, Saw serves as a sequel to the first film, offering an original narrative.
In the movie “Saw,” the protagonist is Detective Tapp, who was originally portrayed by Danny Glover. This character is compelled to navigate a series of deadly traps and intricate puzzles. By introducing a legacy character, the film manages to maintain an authentic connection to the original movies. Notably, it effectively captures the visual style of the films, including rapid cuts and seamless transitions, which are characteristic of the movie series.
5 Condemned: Criminal Origins
Disturbingly Realistic Crime Horror As A Framed Agent
As a gamer, I find myself immersed in the chilling world of “Condemned: Criminal Origins,” where I step into the shoes of Ethan Thomas, an FBI agent wrongfully accused. My mission is to track down the elusive Match Maker killer, a mystery that leads me through the grimiest corners of society. This first-person journey takes me on a harrowing descent, revealing grisly surprises that have lost none of their impact, even after almost two decades.
The game “Condemned: Criminal Origins” is frequently lauded for its grimy and intense settings, menacing adversaries, and chilling ambiance that creates a spine-tingling experience. All aspects of the game are realistic, boosting the horror that protagonist Agent Thomas faces as he struggles to clear his name.
4 The Evil Within
The Spiritual Successor To Resident Evil Warps The Mind
In the beginning of “The Evil Within”, players take on the role of detective Sebastian Castellanos, who is dispatched to an unusual location in response to a distress call. From this point, the game escalates as Castellanos plunges into a universe of grisly and psychologically unsettling terror, drawing inspiration from numerous horror films of yore.
Initially, Sebastian appears as your typical gruff, middle-aged detective character in a story, but as events unfold and secrets are unveiled, The Evil Within transforms into an exceptional horror game. Notably, it was developed by the creator of Resident Evil games, allowing him to build on his past successes while introducing something new and innovative.
3 Resident Evil 2 (2019)
The Remake Makes Leon Kennedy Even Better
The initial version of Resident Evil 2, a timeless classic, was generally praised by dedicated Resident Evil enthusiasts. However, they found that an updated remake, featuring current graphics and a third-person viewpoint, might have surpassed the original game in terms of quality. The narrative follows two distinct characters: Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy. In this story, Leon serves as a new recruit for the Raccoon City Police Department, who unfortunately happened to join on the most disastrous day.
In Raccoon City, where the T-Virus outbreak takes center stage, Leon and Claire find themselves trapped inside the city’s police department. An old, deserted police station only intensifies the creepiness, serving as a striking location within the game series. This setting gains even more notoriety when players are pursued by zombies, Lickers, and the mysterious Mr. X – all creations of Umbrella.
2 Alan Wake 2
A New Character Adds More Perspective To The Bizarre Adventure
It’s not uncommon for highly anticipated sequels to fall short of expectations, but “Alan Wake 2” exceeded them and became a big winner of numerous awards. Remedy Entertainment built upon what they did exceptionally well in the original game, enhancing it to deliver a thought-provoking horror experience centered around the title character, Alan Wake, who is reminiscent of Stephen King’s work.
In Alan Wake 2, it’s not just Alan who can be controlled, as Saga Anderson, an FBI profiler, enters the scene and becomes entangled in the mysterious and eerie world that unfolds. The game masterfully combines sci-fi, fantasy, and psychological aspects to create a sequel that many believe surpasses the original.
1 Resident Evil 4 (2023)
Leon Returns In One Of The Best Remakes Ever Made
In the thrilling comeback of Leon Kennedy, he was dispatched to a remote area of Spain in Resident Evil 4, on a mission to locate the president’s kidnapped daughter who was being held by a cult infected with a fresh strain of virus. The remake of this classic horror game successfully preserves the action-packed essence of its original form while heightening the fear and suspense that previous Resident Evil remakes were known for.
From the chainsaw wielders to the regenerators, the Las Plagas-infected keep the players on their toes because they are not traditional zombies. They can wield weapons, use tactics, and feature more abilities than simply clawing and biting, but thankfully, Leon continues to be one of the best protagonists after the Raccoon City incident.
