Undisputed Receives Mixed Reviews Following 1.0 Release

Key Takeaways

  • Some players feel the game is lacking promised features and hasn’t improved post-early access.
  • Undisputed releases on October 11, but Deluxe Edition owners can play from October 8.

As a gamer who’s been around the block more times than I can count, I’ve seen my fair share of highly-anticipated games that fail to live up to expectations. And it seems like Undisputed, the new boxing game from Steel City Interactive, might be joining that unfortunate club.

Without a doubt, the much-awaited boxing game, “Undisputed,” developed by Steel City Interactive, has generated mixed responses from Steam gamers following its departure from early access on October 8th. Although the complete version of Undisputed won’t be available until October 11th, those who opt for the Deluxe WBC Edition have already had the chance to step into the ring three days earlier.

For over a decade, there hasn’t been a significant boxing game released, but now, “Undisputed” is looking to bridge that gap in the market with what Steel City claims is “the most genuine boxing game yet.” In January 2023, it was initially launched in early access through Steam. This year, Steel City and publisher Deep Silver officially announced the full release date for “Undisputed.” Although Steam users have been playing for nearly two years, action on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S will start from October 8 or 11, depending on which edition has been pre-ordered.

Despite the high expectations following the phenomenal success of Fight Night Champion in 2011, Undisputed seems to be struggling with its full release reception. On Steam, the game currently has a ‘mixed’ rating, with only around 58% of its 339 reviews being positive. Although Undisputed still maintains an overall ‘mostly positive’ score, recent reviews have emerged since its October 8 release, revealing varying concerns. Notably, many players feel that Undisputed played better during the early access stage.

Undisputed Receives Mixed Reviews on Steam

On its launch on October 8th, the boxing video game “Undisputed” was met with a total of 42 unfavorable reviews. This may not seem like a significant number, but it represents an increase from the previous days where it only garnered between 4 to 7 negative reviews daily. On the same day, there were also 49 positive reviews. However, it’s evident that the new “Undisputed” players are finding the game to have a mixed reception.

According to Steam user Buster, the game “Undisputed” is yet to deliver several features that Steel City initially promised, like having a referee visible in the ring, better camera angles, and more. They also expressed that the game’s career mode seems incredibly basic. Other users have mentioned that the game hasn’t made significant improvements since its early access phase. Steam user Mudbutt says it “feels like nothing has changed,” while Killer Crocs thinks the quality of the game has noticeably declined.

For Steel City Interactive, the mixed reception towards their game “Undisputed” might be overshadowed by the criticism they received prior to its launch. This backlash occurred when the studio decided to exclude controversial boxer Ryan Garcia from the game’s roster following his expulsion by the World Boxing Council due to questionable social media posts. While some agreed with this move, many within the gaming community felt that Garcia should have still been included in the game.
