‘It’s Not An Emerging Betting Sector Anymore’: Expert Panel On The Growth of Esports Betting

As someone who has been following and participating in the world of esports for quite some time now, it’s truly fascinating to witness the rapid growth and evolution of the esports betting market. The numbers speak for themselves – billions are being wagered in this sector, and it’s no longer an emerging market but a thriving one.

Lately, a knowledgeable group of professionals discussed the expansion and current situation of the esports betting market at ESI Lisbon. Currently, esports betting contributes an astounding 53% to the total esports income, making it the most profitable sector within this market.

The panel was occupied by Moritz Maurer (GRID Esports), Karl Rönn (Kambi Abios), Gal Ehrlich (BETER). As they delved into the esports betting market, it emerged that prospects were quite promising.

‘There Are Billions in Wagers’

In today’s world, sports betting platforms that cater to mainstream markets often include esports tournaments as well. Furthermore, an increasing number of specialized platforms dedicated solely to esports betting are emerging. For the most popular esports games, each tournament presents a profitable chance for both operators and enthusiasts to gain some extra income.

That was the theme touched on by Moritz Maurer, the CEO at GRID Esports:

As a dedicated enthusiast, I can confidently say that the betting sector has moved beyond its emerging stage. Today, billions of dollars are wagered annually, reflecting the massive growth and acceptance it’s gained over the years. Having been immersed in this world for six years now, I can attest to the challenges we faced in introducing a significant paradigm shift. However, the tide has turned, and we’re currently witnessing a time where our innovative ideas are being embraced – there’s a genuine interest and investment in what we do.

The abundance of data generated within the esports industry is significantly contributing to its growth. Over time, this data has transformed and is now a crucial asset for businesses. It enables organizations to identify talent more effectively, media outlets to deliver clearer reports, and betting operators to create more sophisticated and complex markets.

Gal Ehrlich of BETER referenced that very point:

Considering the vast quantity of data produced by esports games, it’s truly colossal. Transforming this data into effective algorithms sets one apart… The lines between traditional sports and esports are becoming increasingly indistinct. This trend is expected to persist – with growing popularity, increasing tournaments, and expanded visibility for these games.

He was bold and bullish about the future of esports betting: ‘It’s here to stay and to further develop.’

At present, Counter-Strike, League of Legends, and Dota 2 are colloquially known as the top trio in esports. They boast the greatest funding, the most prestigious competitions, and the highest betting volumes among the numerous games that comprise this field.

But things are changing, of course.

According to Moritz Maurer, VALORANT is no longer a rising game. It’s now comparable to Counter-Strike in terms of betting volumes per map. He also suggests that the top three games previously known as “The Big Three” have been joined by another game, making it “The Big Four.

According to Karl Rönn from Kambi Abios, he shared essential insights regarding the common esports bettor profile. Notably, it was emphasized that the realm of esports betting is expanding and merging with the broader betting market.

Most sports bettors tend to be males who are slightly older than one might expect. Interestingly, the majority of those who wager on eSports are avid sports enthusiasts, particularly in football or other sports, with a strong preference for football.

Esports appeals to a broad range of people, and this audience is continuously expanding. It’s predicted that around half a billion individuals globally are passionate about esports, and with over two billion gamers constantly contributing to this market, its growth is not slowing down – and quite swiftly at that.
