It’s been almost three years since the new Harry Potter TV series was first announced. Since then, we’ve learned who the main young actors will be, which writers and producers are involved, and when filming is expected to begin.
We finally have a confirmed release timeframe for the first season, according to Casey Bloys, Chairman and Content CEO of HBO. Soon, Harry Potter fans will be able to revisit the Wizarding World in a new adaptation that aims to improve upon the movies and truly honor J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series.
HBO Exec Reveals Early 2027 Release for the New Harry Potter Show
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series finally has a release timeframe. According to HBO’s content chief Casey Bloys, who recently spoke with Deadline, the show is now expected to premiere in early 2027. While previous estimates suggested a late 2027 release, Bloys confirmed the more specific timeframe now that production is moving forward.
We’ve previously estimated 2027, and I’d refine that to the beginning of the year. I can’t give a more specific timeframe like a particular month right now, but we’re aiming for early 2027.
This announcement aligns with what Casey Bloys previously told Deadline in September 2024: the Harry Potter TV series is expected to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027. At the time, he explained that the writers had just begun working on the show, making it too early to pinpoint a specific release date.
Harry Potter’s New Cast & Crew Are Hard at Work in the UK
Production on the new Harry Potter TV series began in the UK this summer, after the main actors were cast. This is a complete restart of the story, so the original stars – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint – are too old to reprise their roles as Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
A fresh cast is taking on the roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry, Alastair Stout is the new Ron, and Arabella Stanton will continue as Hermione.
The cast for the new Harry Potter TV series is growing! Katherine Parkinson will play Molly Weasley, while Tristan and Gabriel Harland will share the roles of the mischievous twins, Fred and George. Ruari Spooner is set to play Percy Weasley, and Gracie Cochrane will portray Ginny Weasley. While Arthur and Charlie Weasley haven’t been cast yet, their limited presence in the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, isn’t a surprise. Notably, Charlie Weasley, who plays a significant role in the books, was left out of the films, but he will be appearing in the new TV series.
The cast for the first season of the new Harry Potter series includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Warwick Davis will return to play Filius Flitwick, a role he originally played in the Harry Potter films.
How Nick Frost Prepared for Hagrid Before His Harry Potter Audition
Robbie Coltrane’s family, like many others, makes watching the Harry Potter movies a yearly Christmas tradition. Before his audition for the role of Hagrid, Coltrane was determined to fully embody the character. As part of his preparation, he actually wrote the name “Hagrid” 7,000 times while rewatching the films, hoping to increase his chances of landing the part.
I’m a big Harry Potter fan – my family and I watch all the movies together every Christmas, starting on December 20th and continuing for about ten days. Interestingly, before I got the part of Hagrid, my partner suggested I try to visualize it happening. So, last Christmas, I spent the entire day watching all the Harry Potter films on TV and, while doing so, wrote the name “Hagrid” 7,000 times!
It was successful, though likely due to Frost’s incredible skill more than anything else – probably around 99.9%. Still, a little bit of magic might have helped, too.
