As a seasoned player with countless hours invested in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, I can’t help but feel a mix of relief and curiosity with the recent version 13.0.3 update. Relief because finally, the long-standing issue with Global Smash Power rankings has been addressed, and curiosity as Nintendo continues to tinker with the game without any major character balance changes.

On October 8th, Nintendo rolled out an update (version 13.0.3) for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This update fixed a problem where the “Global Smash Power” rankings wouldn’t reset to their original levels after a connection interruption during a match’s conclusion. Notably, this latest update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate doesn’t include any adjustments to character balancing.

The most recent update for “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” arrived about eight months following the previous version 13.0.2 content patch. In the 13.0.2 update, the only change mentioned in the patch notes was the inclusion of Sora Amiibo compatibility, which was added more than two years after Sora debuted as the game’s final DLC character. Despite no balance adjustments being made since version 13.0.1 was released in December 2021, players of varying abilities still engage in local and online matches, picking their preferred characters to compete with.

A day after Nintendo Switch got a software update, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also released an updated version (13.0.3). According to Nintendo, this update addresses an issue with the game’s Global Smash Power (GSP) ranking system, where it wouldn’t reset to the correct level if there was an interruption in connection during specific times after an online match ended. Nintendo mentioned that there might be compatibility issues with replays from versions 9.0.0 to 13.0.2 after updating to version 13.0.3. To save previous replays, players should move them to the Vault and convert them into videos before updating. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate users can download version 13.0.3 by connecting their Switch to the internet, allowing the game to automatically update if it’s been played recently or by going to the Home menu, pressing the Plus button, and selecting Software Update.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 13.0.3 Notes (October 8, 2024)

  • Online: Fixed an issue in which Global Smash Power would not return to appropriate levels when the connection was disrupted with specific timing at the end of a match.
  • Note: There may be compatibility issues with replays from Ver. 9.0.0 to 13.0.2. Replays from Ver. 8.1.0 and earlier are not compatible. If you want to keep your replays, convert them into videos before installing the update. You can do this via Vault → Replays → Replay Data → Convert to Video.

Since updates for the game “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” have been less frequent since 2021, it has still been expanded with new Spirit Board content featuring characters from newer Nintendo games. Even though “Pokemon Scarlet and Violet” were launched a year after the main support for “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” concluded, the Spirits of Koraidon, Miraidon, Ogerpon, Terapagos, and the Paldean starters were permanently incorporated into the game in a July 2024 update.

Despite persistent speculation about a new Nintendo Switch successor, Nintendo is still focusing on updating their major games whenever necessary. We’ll find out in the future if there might be another “Super Smash Bros” installment for the next Nintendo platform.
