As a seasoned veteran of the Hyrulean battlefield and an avid collector of Zelda memorabilia, I can confidently say that it’s high time for young Link to make a comeback in the next installment of The Legend of Zelda series. The last time we saw our pint-sized hero was back in the ’90s with games like Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, and while he’s made brief appearances since then, it’s been a long time coming for a proper young Link adventure.

Perhaps it’s high time that “The Legend of Zelda” franchise introduces a variant of Link reminiscent of those absent in recent titles. Both “Breath of the Wild” and “Tears of the Kingdom” showcased exceptional iterations of Link within “The Legend of Zelda”, but since their release, there’s been speculation about the series’ direction moving forward. A significant aspect of the upcoming game will be shaped by its portrayal of Link, making it potentially fitting to resurface a past version of this iconic character in the next installment.

While not the lead character in “Echoes of Wisdom,” Link has been the central figure in almost every game within the series, each incarnation tailored to suit the specific title. The most well-known version of Link is that of a young man in his characteristic green attire, but this isn’t his only appearance. For instance, “The Wind Waker” featured a younger, cel-shaded Link whose design reappeared in subsequent games, and “Breath of the Wild” introduced yet another distinctive look with its blue tunic design. Despite these varying appearances, Link consistently portrays the role of a hero.

Fans who are well-versed in the series will recall instances where a younger Link has appeared, but it has been quite a while since a youthful Link embarked on a significant journey. So, one possible twist for the next “Legend of Zelda” could be the return of a young Link wielding his sword once more.

Young Link Hasn’t Had an Adventure in Years

The narrative journey of Link as the Hero of Time in iconic Nintendo games like “Ocarina of Time” and “Majora’s Mask” commences with him as a young lad. Despite his tender age, Link is portrayed as a fearless and dexterous explorer from the very beginning. However, following these titles, the depiction of Young Link has evolved less consistently. For instance, in “The Wind Waker,” we have another youthful Link, but he’s more of a cartoon character. Similarly, the Link in the remake of “Link’s Awakening” appears quite young but also possesses a toy-like quality and a distinctive stylistic touch. Outside of “Super Smash Bros.,” a more lifelike and detailed Young Link has been scarce for some time, without a substantial modification to his artistic style.

The Next Legend of Zelda Could Explore Young Link’s Family

In the upcoming “Legend of Zelda” game, I find myself excited at the prospect of a younger version of me, Link, being the protagonist. This could potentially bring into play an underused trope: if I’m still young, my family might become integral to the storyline. They could serve as motivation for me or even provide some of my initial gear, perhaps items passed down from my parents. Interestingly, though we’ve seen other relatives of mine in various games, neither of my parents have ever appeared onscreen in any version of the game. So, in this new adventure, it would be groundbreaking to finally meet Link’s parents for the first time.

After the release of “Tears of the Kingdom”, it’s clear that each new game needs its unique flavor. Speaking as a gamer, I can imagine the next Legend of Zelda game featuring a fresh journey with our familiar hero, young Link. This could open up opportunities for a brand-new narrative or a modernized take on an old friend, Link. Since Link is such a crucial part of the Zelda series, it seems fitting that a new young Link might step into the limelight.
