Highguard Makes 5v5 Raid Mode Permament Following Player Feedback

After listening to player suggestions, Wildlight Entertainment has made 5v5 Raid Mode a permanent feature in Highguard. Despite launching just over a week ago, the game has seen a significant drop in players – over 80% have stopped playing. It remains to be seen if this new addition will attract players back to Highguard.

Millions of gamers watched the reveal of Highguard at The Game Awards 2025, but the game received a somewhat disappointing initial reaction. Many were frustrated that such a prominent spot at a major event was given to a game that relies on ongoing purchases and updates. Concerns grew that Highguard, a team-based shooter focused on player-versus-player raids, might struggle like PlayStation’s Concord. Despite this, Highguard launched on January 26th, and players quickly shared their thoughts online. A frequent complaint was that matches felt sparse because they only supported teams of three players. Luckily, the developers at Wildlight Entertainment listened to the feedback and have made adjustments.

Highguard Makes 5v5 Raid Mode Permament

Players who enjoy fast-paced action now have another option: 5v5 Raid Mode has been permanently added to the game! It was initially available for a limited time as part of a test for the Highguard update. Wildlight Entertainment reported the test went well, with players almost evenly split between the 3v3 and 5v5 modes over the weekend. Because of the positive response, they’ve decided to make 5v5 Raid Mode a permanent fixture. As the developer announced, “You asked for it, and we’re happy to deliver!”

The community has generally reacted well to this change. Players have shared positive feedback on platforms like Reddit and in Steam reviews, saying they prefer the 5v5 format. Many enjoy the increased action and chaos that comes with larger teams in casual play. While most support 5v5 for casual matches, some players hope Wildlight Entertainment will stick with 3v3 for the competitive playlist. Others have suggested offering both 3v3 and 5v5 options when the competitive mode launches.

Over the next few weeks, it will be interesting to observe how the new permanent 5v5 mode affects Highguard. While players seem to like it, a single mode probably won’t be enough to dramatically increase the number of people playing. Currently, Highguard has around 8,318 players on Steam, according to SteamDB. This is a big drop from the 97,249 players the game had right after it launched. It’s important to remember that Highguard is also available on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, meaning the total number of players is likely higher. Still, the game has clearly lost a substantial player base since its initial release.

Okay, so the player numbers aren’t amazing right now, but the team at Wildlight Entertainment isn’t giving up on Highguard! They’ve actually laid out a roadmap of what’s coming, and it looks pretty cool. Basically, they’re planning on releasing content in episodes all the way through 2026. We’re talking new Wardens to play as, bases to build, weapons to unlock, and even more mods to customize everything – it sounds like they’ve got a lot planned!
