As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment and frustration upon hearing about the recent moves by Turkey and Russia to block access to Discord. This instant messaging platform has been an integral part of my gaming community for years, serving as a hub for communication, collaboration, and camaraderie among gamers worldwide.
Discord, a widely-used instant messaging service for gamers, has found itself facing access restrictions in Turkey and Russia. The firm has initiated an investigation into the service disruptions in those areas, hinting that they may not have been part of the decision to cut off access.
Turkey at least has explained why it has blocked Discord, but the reason is damning.
Severe Allegations
Turkey has taken steps to restrict access to Discord, claiming that the service facilitates ‘offenses related to child sexual abuse and indecency’. This criticism was voiced by Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc in court proceedings, as reported by Reuters.
The content shared on Discord’s platform is largely shielded from security examination due to its stringent privacy guidelines.
As a gamer, I’ve found myself in a situation where I can’t scrutinize the content shared on Discord by myself. I only get involved when users flag concerns about content they find problematic. Unfortunately, Discord doesn’t share its own data, such as IP addresses and content, with our security team. This lack of information left us no choice but to restrict access.
Recently, Russia has prohibited the use of Discord nationwide due to allegations that the platform disregarded Russian law. In a recent announcement, it was highlighted that Russian authorities had asked Discord to remove several items deemed illegal, yet the platform did not cooperate, leading to the decision by Russian authorities to restrict access to the application.
For a long time, certain nations have experimented with limiting access to Discord, and some continue to provide a partial service that may prevent different features of the app, like VOIP. In the past, countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Egypt have blocked voice communications, but a comprehensive ban on Discord is not common.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been informed by Discord reps that they’re digging deep into an issue we’re experiencing. Unfortunately, they can’t yet give a solid timeframe on when services will be back up and running in these particular regions.
