Nintendo Reveals the 4 Best-Selling Switch 2 Games So Far

Nintendo recently shared its financial results, highlighting the four top-selling games on the Switch 2. As the original Switch becomes Nintendo’s best-selling console ever, there’s a lot of anticipation for the Switch 2. Although holiday sales weren’t as high as some predicted, the Switch 2 is still the quickest-selling console in history, having already sold over 17 million units.

The Switch 2 is proving incredibly popular, largely thanks to its fantastic games. Not only can it play almost all of the games from the original Switch, giving players a huge library right away, but it’s also quickly building up a strong collection of games you can only play on the Switch 2. Even after just seven months, the system already boasts an impressive selection of exclusive titles that will keep players engaged for a long time.

Nintendo has shared sales figures for three games exclusive to the Switch 2, as well as one title also available on older consoles. As expected, Mario Kart World is the best-selling Switch 2 game so far, with 14.03 million copies sold. It was included with many Switch 2 launch bundles, making its success predictable. Just like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was the top seller on the original Switch, Mario Kart World appears poised to achieve the same level of popularity on the new console.

List of the Best-Selling Switch 2 Games Published by Nintendo

  1. Mario Kart World – 14.03 million
  2. Donkey Kong Bananza – 4.25 million
  3. Pokemon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition – 3.89 million
  4. Kirby Air Riders – 1.76 million

Coming in at number two is Donkey Kong Bananza. This new 3D platformer, which lets you destroy parts of the game world, has already sold 4.25 million copies. With such great reviews, it will be interesting to watch how well it continues to sell. Currently, no Donkey Kong game appears on the list of Nintendo Switch’s all-time bestsellers, so Bananza might eventually be overtaken.

Coming in at number three is Pokemon Legends: Z-A – the Nintendo Switch 2 version. It’s the most successful game released for the Switch 2 so far, selling 3.89 million copies on that system alone. While the Switch 2 version offers improved performance and graphics, the gameplay is largely the same as the original. If the next generation of Pokemon games are also exclusive to the Switch 2, as many predict, they’re likely to quickly outsell Legends: Z-A.

Rounding out the top four best-selling Switch 2 games from Nintendo is Kirby Air Riders, which has sold 1.76 million copies so far. Released towards the end of the year, it had less time to gain sales compared to other titles, meaning its numbers are likely to increase. However, with major updates for the game already finished, its long-term sales might be limited.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Didn’t Crack 1 Million Units Sold

Okay, so I’ve been checking the sales numbers for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and it’s a little worrying. It doesn’t seem to have hit 1 million copies sold yet, and it’s nowhere to be found on Nintendo’s list of top-selling Switch 2 games. I know it came out on both the original Switch and the new one, so the sales are split, but still… not seeing it on that list is kinda concerning. It definitely makes me wonder about the future of the Metroid series, to be honest.

Despite selling over a million copies, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment wasn’t included in Nintendo’s sales reports. This is because the game was published by Koei Tecmo in Japan, not Nintendo.

However, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is a bit of a special situation. Its development was unusually lengthy; after being announced in 2017, the game was essentially restarted in 2019 with Retro Studios taking over. Currently, it has the lowest review scores of any main Metroid Prime game, which likely contributes to its slower sales. It remains to be seen if it will become one of the best-selling games on the Switch 2, especially with several other strong exclusive titles planned for release, so it’s best to be realistic about its potential.
