15 Strongest Dragon Ball Super Characters Who Can Turn Super Saiyan, Ranked

Goku’s first transformation into a Super Saiyan during the Frieza Saga was a turning point for anime and the entire Dragon Ball series. Since then, Dragon Ball has consistently introduced new and more powerful Super Saiyans, especially in Dragon Ball Super, which has really explored the idea to its fullest.

By the Tournament of Power, fifteen characters in Dragon Ball Super could transform into Super Saiyans, with varying levels of power. While many Saiyans now have their own unique transformations – like Ultra Instinct, Ultra Ego, and Gohan Beast – to compete with the strongest beings in the series, the Super Saiyan forms still hold importance.

15. Teen Goten

Goten is incredibly strong, becoming a Super Saiyan at a younger age than anyone before Pan. During the Majin Buu Saga, he was even as powerful as Gohan before Gohan resumed his training. However, Goten doesn’t really care about getting stronger, which is clear in the peaceful period after the Cell Saga. Goku actually has to convince him to fight in the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai.

In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Goten seems to have become the weakest Super Saiyan. While he can still team up with Trunks to fight powerful enemies like Cell Max, he prefers using his abilities to deal with everyday criminals instead of major threats. He’s even lost the ability to fuse with Trunks. Despite this, he’s still strong enough to join the Super Saiyan Battle Royale in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103, though he’s likely to be one of the first to lose.

14. Teen Trunks

Trunks is a year older than Goten, and has generally been a bit more powerful. Even Goku noticed this during the fight with Majin Buu, suggesting Trunks reduce his strength so he and Goten could fuse effectively. By the time of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie, their power levels seem closer, but Trunks likely still has a slight edge, mainly because he gets more battle experience than Goten.

I’ve been following the Dragon Ball Super manga, and it’s interesting to see how Goten and Trunks are training. They’re working on Android 17’s island, fighting off some Cell Juniors that somehow survived the Cell Games. It’s clearly meant to get them prepared for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, but even with that training, they’re still outmatched by the Gammas. During the fight with Cell Max, they can only offer limited assistance to Gohan.

13. Cabba

Cabba is a top-ten fighter in Universe 6 and holds a special place in Saiyan history as the first from Planet Sadala to achieve the Super Saiyan transformation. During a tournament, Vegeta recognizes Cabba’s potential and guides him through the process of becoming a Super Saiyan by helping him unlock his hidden power through strong feelings. While Cabba is a very powerful fighter, he hasn’t reached the level of a God like some other Saiyans.

Vegeta easily defeats Cabba, despite Cabba’s increased strength from the Tournament of Power. While Cabba has improved, he’s still not as powerful as other Saiyans. His most important role in the Universe Survival Saga was finding Caulifla and Kale, who both become far stronger Super Saiyans than he is.

12. Gotenks

As a huge Dragon Ball fan, it blows my mind to think there was a point where Gotenks was a top-tier fighter! Remember the beginning of Battle of Gods? He was seriously the third strongest Z-Fighter, right after Vegito and Ultimate Gohan. But honestly, getting defeated by Beerus seemed to really sideline him. It was a shame – they didn’t even bother bringing him to fight Frieza’s forces in Resurrection ‘F’, and he was completely left out when Universe 7 assembled for the Tournament of Power. It’s like they just forgot about him!

In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Goten and Trunks messed up their fusion, resulting in a heavier, less powerful version of Gotenks. This form couldn’t transform into a Super Saiyan, though it still managed to cause some damage to Cell Max. Had the fusion been successful, a Super Saiyan Gotenks would have been a big help in the movie’s final fight.

11. Goku Black

In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Goku Black immediately achieves Super Saiyan Rosé after gaining enough Zenkai Boosts, skipping the regular Super Saiyan form altogether. However, the Dragon Ball Super manga presents a different version, where Goku Black first unlocks regular Super Saiyan and then has to fight and earn Super Saiyan Rosé during his battle with Vegeta.

While Super Saiyan Goku Black has a great look, he isn’t particularly powerful when you compare him to other characters. Vegeta can easily defeat him. It’s also important to know that Goku Black is much weaker in the manga version of Dragon Ball Super than he is in the anime. When the anime continues, it will be interesting to see if they revisit the Super Saiyan Goku Black arc or move directly to Super Saiyan Rosé.

10. Caulifla

The Dragon Ball universe is full of incredibly talented fighters, and Caulifla from Universe 6 is one of the most impressive. She quickly learned to transform into a Super Saiyan with just a little help from Cabba, making it seem effortless.

During the Tournament of Power, Caulifla rapidly achieved Super Saiyan Grade 2 and even Super Saiyan 2 – transformations that took Gohan months of intense training and a deeply emotional experience to reach. She became powerful enough to fight Goku evenly, though she needed assistance from Kale to do so. However, Caulifla hadn’t reached the level of a God yet, and had to fuse with Kale just to have a chance against Goku in his Super Saiyan God form.

9. Kale

Kale is a powerful character from Universe 6, known as a Legendary Super Saiyan – essentially the version of Broly from her universe. She’s actually the first officially recognized Legendary Super Saiyan in the entire Dragon Ball series. When Kale transforms, she becomes incredibly strong and unstable, even managing to destroy several universes in the Dragon Ball Super manga.

In the anime Dragon Ball Super, Kale is incredibly powerful, even able to significantly harm Super Saiyan Blue Goku – a remarkable accomplishment. Similar to Broly, she struggles to control her transformations and becomes much weaker when she’s calm. However, with proper training, Kale has the potential to become the strongest fighter in Universe 6.

8. Kefla

Kefla, the result of Caulifla and Kale fusing with the Potara earrings, is noticeably stronger in the Dragon Ball Super anime compared to the manga. In the anime, Kefla is incredibly powerful, even pushing Goku to his limits and forcing him to use Ultra Instinct again after his battle with Jiren. Goku ultimately wins only because of Ultra Instinct.

The Kefla character in the Dragon Ball Super manga isn’t as powerful as she was in the anime; she’s roughly equal in strength to Ultimate Gohan, which is still strong, but not at a divine level. In the manga, Kefla and Gohan fight each other to a simultaneous knockout.

7. Gohan

Right now, Gohan is the most powerful Z-Fighter when he transforms into his ‘Beast’ form. However, in his standard Super Saiyan form, he’s still not as strong as fighters like Vegeta, Goku, and Broly. He used to be the strongest fighter in Dragon Ball Z without needing to fuse with anyone, but he lost that position at the start of Dragon Ball Super with the Battle of Gods saga.

Throughout Dragon Ball Super, Gohan becomes weaker because he stops training consistently. Piccolo even has to help him relearn fundamental skills before the Tournament of Power arc in the manga. However, by the Moro Saga, Gohan has improved significantly and tells Piccolo in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero that he’s been secretly training to maintain his strength.

6. Vegeta

Vegeta naturally has a higher potential for power than Goku, and doesn’t have to train as much to reach similar levels. In the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Vegeta’s anger after Beerus slaps Bulma gives him such a power boost that, even as a Super Saiyan 2, he exceeds the power of Super Saiyan 3 Goku.

Although Vegeta now primarily uses Super Saiyan Blue Evolution and Ultra Ego, he’s still incredibly strong even in his standard Super Saiyan form. The reason Goku’s Super Saiyan is generally more powerful is that Vegeta never fully mastered the Full Power Super Saiyan transformation and has instead focused on improving his God-level forms.
