As a dedicated Monster Hunter fan with over 15 years of slaying experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment regarding the upcoming release of Monster Hunter Wilds. On one hand, the game looks promising with its new mount Seikret, dynamic weather states, and improved mechanics. However, the absence of a new weapon class is a bit of a letdown for someone who’s grown accustomed to the series’ constant evolution in this regard.
A brand-new “Monster Hunter” game is nearly here, titled “Monster Hunter Wilds,” which is set to launch on February 28, 2025. This latest installment marks the beginning of the 6th generation for the “Monster Hunter” series, following a six-year journey that included “Monster Hunter World,” “Monster Hunter Rise,” and “Monster Hunter Now.” Fans are eagerly anticipating its release, despite some performance concerns being reported. However, the enthusiasm surrounding “Monster Hunter Wilds” has been so intense that it’s boosted the sales of “Monster Hunter World,” a level of excitement that seldom wanes quickly.
Multiple instances demonstrate that this reaction is valid, and singling out a single rationale proves challenging. The latest addition, Mount Seikret, significantly expands the hunting grounds in Monster Hunter Wilds, allowing quests to unfold across vast territories unparalleled before. Moreover, various locations will feature diverse weather conditions, further enriching the spontaneous hunts. It appears that Monster Hunter Wilds is poised to hold the title of the biggest Monster Hunter game, while conspicuously refraining from reintroducing a past Monster Hunter tradition. However, it has sound justifications and prior examples for making this choice.
Monster Hunter Wilds Is Still Gambling On Its Usual Weapon Rotation
Over the course of its existence, the Monster Hunter series has presented a total of 18 unique weapon categories, with 14 of them being consistently popular choices. Ranging from traditional options like the Greatsword and Bowgun to more unusual ones such as Gunlance and Switch Axe, each weapon class has developed a dedicated fanbase. Notably, while Monster Hunter Wilds displays some unique features, it has maintained the core weapons in their original form, merely refining them with added details. However, until late in the game’s promotional phase, it wasn’t confirmed whether any new weapon would be introduced to this collection following years of familiarity.
Despite Demand, Monster Hunter’s Developers Had To Keep Priorities Straight
It was only the recent series of Gamescom weapon trailers, and an interview with MH Wilds’ art director Kaname Fujioka and series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto on Italian website Multiplayer.it, that de-confirmed a fifteenth weapon class for Wilds. Fujioka stated that the idea of adding a new weapon type for Monster Hunter Wilds was never totally abandoned, but the development staff had so many ideas piling up for Wilds that it couldn’t take priority. Tsujimoto added that even if the developers had the time and resources to make another weapon, that would only detract from improving the expected weapons, as well as MH Wilds as a whole.
Monster Hunter Has Been Quietly Remaking Weapons For Decades
In the development of Monster Hunter Wilds, the team acknowledges fans’ requests for a new primary weapon class, but chose not to incorporate it in this game. This decision might seem puzzling given that the Charge Blade and Insect Glaive were added to the core weapons group in 2013’s Monster Hunter 4. However, Tsujimoto has explained this as well. Each weapon class in Monster Hunter, including those from MH4, has evolved significantly since their introduction, enhancing the gameplay experience with each new release.
It Isn’t Clear If Or When Mainline Monster Hunter Will Add A New Weapon
With the recent introduction of a new counterattack and perfect timing mechanism across nearly every weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds, along with its Focus Mode and weapon-switching feature, it’s uncertain where else this game can progress in terms of weapon innovation for this generation. The expansion of Monster Hunter Wilds might introduce mechanics similar to Iceborne and Sunbreak, but not on the same scale. Since many older weapons have undergone significant adjustments, there’s no need to add new weapons to Monster Hunter Wilds at this point. However, future entries must decide whether to take the risk of making fewer changes or introducing a new weapon each time.
