Best Isometric Action Games Of All Time

Isometric games have a strong history on PC, with many classics originating there. While franchises like Dungeon Siege were popular, they eventually faded away. The same happened with console-exclusive titles and one-off games, such as Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest.

There are many isometric action games available, both old and new. While we’ve highlighted ten great titles, games like Alienation, Darksiders Genesis, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and Victor Vran are also worth checking out. But what games did make the cut? Let’s take a look and rank them based on their lasting appeal and how fun they are to play.

Tunic

Follow The Guide

Tunic isn’t just another isometric action-adventure game—it offers an experience that extends beyond typical gaming. Players take on the role of a small fox, exploring a vast world, venturing into dungeons, battling enemies, and solving tricky puzzles. Don’t let its charming appearance fool you, though—this game is surprisingly challenging!

Players will eventually realize they need to consult the game’s manual to understand how to progress. While the manual can be a bit confusing initially, getting hints from other players online should help them understand that Tunic is a game about games – a meta-game.

The Legend Of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (2019)

An Updated Classic

I first played Link’s Awakening way back in 1993, and I loved it! They updated it with color a few years later, in ’98, but the version that really blew me away was the remake in 2019. Honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful Zelda games I’ve ever seen – and that includes the amazing Breath of the Wild!

The game mixes up its visuals with both angled, top-down views and traditional 2D scenes, making it feel fresher than some other similar games. It’s a straightforward Zelda experience – shorter and simpler than many others, but still a beloved classic.

Bastion

A World In Tatters

Bastion was Supergiant Games’ debut title, and it was a huge success. Players take on the role of a quiet hero traveling through broken, unfinished lands. As you explore, the world rebuilds itself around you.

The game has a really appealing style, especially with its beautiful watercolor world. But what truly stands out is the narrator – he commented on everything, from fighting to just relaxing. Plus, the game offers a great selection of weapons, and discovering each new one felt really rewarding.

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance

Diablo For Consoles

Unlike the more strategic Baldur’s Gate games, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance focuses on fast-paced, action-packed combat. Players can choose from three characters – an Archer, a Fighter, or a Sorceress – and each will gain experience and find better equipment as they explore dungeons.

The combat is more involved than in some games, but it’s not as quick or smooth as something like Devil May Cry. This game is a simple adventure focused on collecting loot, either solo or with friends, rather than a compelling story. Luckily, fans who remember the original can now play a remastered version on today’s consoles.

Torchlight 2

Pet Perfection

Torchlight was a clear tribute to the classic game Diablo, sharing a similar interface for health and magic. What made it special was that each character could have a pet, and the clever feature of sending items back to town with your pet to sell was a real highlight.

Torchlight 2 builds on the original with the same enjoyable character design and helpful pets, but improves on almost everything else. Players will find larger, more open areas to explore, packed with quests, treasure, and stories, all while battling increasingly challenging monsters. Pets remain a key feature, offering both companionship and combat support when you’re playing solo. Visually, Torchlight 2 is brighter and more colorful, resembling World of Warcraft more than Diablo, making it a great choice for players new to the looter RPG genre or those looking for a lighter, more accessible experience.

Children Of Morta

Stick Together

Children of Morta blends role-playing and roguelike elements with a heartwarming story about family. Players control different members of the Bergson family as they explore dungeons beneath their home. A unique feature is the ability to choose which section of the dungeons to tackle, which makes the experience more enjoyable than many games in this style.

The game features heroes like John, a swordsman with a shield, and Kevin, a sneaky rogue who uses daggers. Battles are visually exciting and feel smooth, and the game includes cooperative play, character progression, and lots of lasting improvements – all features that make it a compelling roguelike RPG.

X-Men Legends 2: Rise Of Apocalypse

Mutant Mayhem

There haven’t been many truly great X-Men games, so X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse is generally considered the best one. This game steps away from the usual Xavier versus Magneto conflict and introduces a larger threat that forces them to team up with their respective groups.

In missions, you control a team of four heroes or villains, and you can switch between them instantly. While things can feel a little crowded, it’s much more manageable with a full team of four players. The game features a great roster of classic characters like Deadpool, Gambit, Wolverine, and Juggernaut – it’s just unfortunate that it’s only available as a physical copy.

Path Of Exile

The Gods Are Calling

Path of Exile is an action RPG heavily inspired by Diablo, and its biggest strength – besides being free-to-play – is how much you can customize your character’s class. The game offers a huge number of skills, displayed on a complex skill tree reminiscent of Final Fantasy X’s Sphere Grid, and players have countless options for combining gems to enhance their equipment.

Unless players deliberately copy a build from an online guide, you’ll rarely find two characters that are exactly the same. While Path of Exile 2, which is currently in early testing, has the potential to surpass the original, Path of Exile was groundbreaking for free-to-play games and helped popularize loot-based RPGs with a new audience.

Hades 2

Move Over Brother

Supergiant Games’ newest title, Hades 2, is a significant step forward from their previous work like Bastion and the original Hades. It features a more compelling story, a beautifully creative art style, and memorable characters. The gameplay is particularly strong, allowing players, as Melinoe, to begin with a magical staff and customize their attacks with temporary upgrades throughout each playthrough.

Players can add effects like fire or water damage to attacks, meaning each of her weapons—beyond her main staff—offers potentially hundreds of unique combinations. This provides a lot of options for creating different character builds. Combined with smooth controls and a satisfying progression system, Hades 2 quickly establishes itself as a top example of modern isometric action games and roguelikes.

Diablo 2

The King Of Isometric Hell

Even though the Diablo series has evolved and many faster action games now exist, Diablo 2 remains a hugely influential game. It was a significant improvement over the first Diablo, offering new character classes, a more detailed equipment system, and a much larger game world.

Blizzard really hit their stride with Diablo 2, and it only improved over time with new content. It was incredibly popular – almost everyone with a computer played it, either solo or with friends – because the gameplay was so addictive. Diablo 2: Resurrected is a good remake, but many players would prefer a simple re-release to recapture the original feeling of the game.
