God of War Ragnarok Meets Black Myth Wukong in New Action-Adventure Game

24 Entertainment Lin’an, the team behind Naraka: Bladepoint, is creating a new game called Blood Message. While it will be available on multiple platforms, Blood Message seems much more inspired by action-adventure games like God of War and Black Myth Wukong – with a focus on story and visuals – than by traditional multiplayer games. It’s set in a historical Chinese world and features a cinematic style reminiscent of Sony’s titles.

24 Entertainment is a game studio owned by Thunder Fire Studio. Thunder Fire Studio, in turn, is owned by NetEase, a large gaming company known for games like Marvel Rivals.

Blood Message is the latest addition to the rising number of visually stunning, action-packed Chinese games, joining titles like Black Myth: Wukong and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, with more like Phantom Blade 0 and Tides of Annihilation on the way. However, Blood Message stands out because it focuses on realistic gameplay and a meaningful story, unlike many other games in the genre. Set during China’s Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), players follow a messenger and his son on a direct, story-focused journey. While the game looks impressive, it aims for historical accuracy without relying on myths or fantasy, offering a unique and potentially refreshing experience in the AAA gaming world.

What Is Blood Message About?

Blood Message’s Story Is Deeply Rooted in Chinese History

Unlike many games that let you play as a hero like a powerful soldier or god, Blood Message puts you in the role of an average person. The developers intentionally made it this way, wanting the game to focus on how everyday people cope with incredible historical events and try to survive them.

Okay, so the game is based on this really cool historical event – the Shazhou uprising. Back in the 800s, Tibet took over Shazhou and Guazhou, and this Tang Dynasty general, Zhang Yichao, had to send ten groups of messengers all the way to the capital, Chang’an, to tell them what happened. What’s interesting is his teenage son is tagging along on this mission, and honestly, it feels like we’re setting up a pretty classic ‘sad dad’ story here. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing yet, but it’s definitely a vibe!

Okay, so Shazhou to Chang’an is roughly 1000 miles in the game, and that tells me Blood Message is aiming to be a really big story. Honestly, 24 Entertainment hasn’t exactly shown off their storytelling skills with Naraka: Bladepoint – that game isn’t really about the plot – so I’m cautiously optimistic about the writing quality. But, the sheer distance covered means we should get a ton of different locations and situations all across Ancient China, which hopefully will lead to some awesome and unexpected story moments. I’m really hoping for a narrative that keeps me guessing!

Blood Message’s Gameplay Looks Like God of War Mixed with Assassin’s Creed

The reveal trailer for Blood Message is surprisingly long, but it doesn’t actually show much actual gameplay. While it looks like gameplay at times, those moments seem overly polished and scripted, making me wonder if they’re representative of what the game will actually play like. I could be mistaken, but that’s my initial impression.

The trailer gives us a good idea of what to expect from the gameplay in Blood Message. It’s played from a third-person perspective, with the camera positioned over the player character’s shoulder. This, along with the main character’s slow and impactful fighting style, makes it feel similar to God of War. The game also seems to follow typical AAA game design, including navigating through narrow spaces.

I’m really excited about Blood Message! It’s different from God of War because it looks like it’s going to mix stealth and action, and honestly, the Ancient China setting gives me major Assassin’s Creed vibes. The stealth seems really cool too – it’s more about smooth animations and cinematic takedowns than open-ended, sandbox-style sneaking like in Metal Gear. From what I’ve seen, you’ll be able to pull off awesome assassinations from all sorts of hidden spots – behind walls, under ledges, even from above! It looks incredibly stylish.

It will be interesting to see how companions are used in Blood Message. The protagonist’s son appears to be a key ally, but the reveal trailer also shows other intriguing characters – a mysterious woman and a man wielding a staff – who both seem to speak in riddles. These companions help the protagonist with challenges like platforming, and the trailer suggests players might even be able to coordinate with them during stealth sections. The game clearly draws inspiration from titles like God of War and Uncharted when it comes to creating compelling companion characters.
