Although not the central protagonist, Gojo Satoru quickly became the most recognizable character in Jujutsu Kaisen, and his immense popularity with fans proves it. The conclusion of the series was particularly difficult for Gojo’s followers, as he tragically died during the Shinjuku Showdown arc. After briefly lowering his defenses while fighting Ryomen Sukuna, Gojo was fatally struck down by a barrage of Curses.
Wow, there was so much speculation about whether Gojo Satoru would come back! But the author, Gege Akutami, has made it clear he always planned for Gojo’s death. It’s amazing though, because Gojo’s sacrifice wasn’t for nothing. Japan did eventually find someone to fill his shoes, and we’re seeing it unfold in the sequel, Modulo! They’ve officially revealed who Gojo’s replacement is, and it’s incredible to watch this new power develop, especially in the recent chapters. And get this – it’s Yuji Itadori! Gojo basically passed on his dream to him, and now we’re seeing Yuji step up in a huge way.
Gojo Satoru Has Been Dead For 68 Years In Jujutsu Kaisen
Gojo Satoru Died In JJK 236
- Fans wanted Gojo to return at the end of the series
- Gege had always planned for Gojo to die
In chapter 236 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Gojo Satoru was defeated. The battle against Ryomen Sukuna in the Shinjuku Showdown arc was incredibly intense, pushing both sorcerers to their absolute limits. While Gojo largely controlled the fight, Sukuna had moments of dominance as well. Ultimately, Sukuna won because of his deeper understanding of Jujutsu and, crucially, because Gojo lowered his defenses. The author, Gege Akutami, also needed to remove Gojo to move the story forward.
I care about everyone and I’m no longer lonely. But at some point, I realized I was setting boundaries – not as a person, but simply as a living being. You can nurture a flower and appreciate its beauty, but you can’t expect it to understand you. — Gojo Satoru to Suguru Geto, Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 236
Gojo demonstrated incredible power, even seeming stronger than the King of Curses at times. However, he ultimately lost the fight and died permanently. Despite many fans hoping he would return later in the story, Gojo has remained dead.
It’s been 68 years since the legendary battle of Shinjuku, and Gojo Satoru is now remembered only through stories. Japan has enjoyed a long period of peace and progress, but that peace is now threatened by a new alien species arriving on Earth with plans to create a new nation. Just when things seem dire, Yuji Itadori has emerged, and his incredible power suggests he’s the true successor to Gojo Satoru – a fitting replacement for the fallen sorcerer.
Yuji Itadori Has Replaced Gojo Satoru As Japan’s Strongest
Yuji Itadori Is The Strongest, Like Gojo
Image by Manga Plus Gojo Satoru was known throughout the original Jujutsu Kaisen series as being overwhelmingly powerful, but this strength also isolated him, as others often saw him only as a tool. Now, it appears Yuji Itadori is facing a similar fate, as demonstrated in chapters 19 and 20 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. Even in a short showing, Yuji’s immense power is clear. He’s currently considered the strongest sorcerer in the country, especially with Yuta Okkotsu and other powerful sorcerers no longer around.
Haven’t we had enough of Gojo Satoru already? — Yuji Itadori
When the fight with Dabura was announced, the first priority for Japan was finding Yuji Itadori. Unable to locate him initially, they had Yuka step in and use the power of Mahoraga. Now that Yuji has appeared, he aims to end the conflict between humans and the aliens, and to help the next generation become stronger. Interestingly, Yuji is approaching this situation in a very different way than Gojo Satoru, even though he’s taking Gojo’s place.
Both Yuji and Gojo were incredibly powerful, but they approached teaching differently. Gojo focused on carefully guiding his students and helping them improve. Yuji, however, is challenging the next generation by throwing them into difficult situations to test their strength. He’s prepared to deal with any consequences, meaning he’ll only step in and fight Dabura if they can’t handle the challenge themselves.
Yuji’s Overall Power Level
Image by Manga Plus Currently, Yuji is incredibly powerful – a true force to be reckoned with. He’s fully mastered both the Shrine Cursed Technique and Blood Manipulation, and seems capable of consistently landing the incredibly difficult Black Flash. This puts him at the very top of the power rankings in Japan right now.
It’s remarkable that Yuji Itadori is effectively immortal. Like Tengen before him, his body now functions similarly to a Cursed Spirit, meaning he no longer ages. This has led to a lot of loneliness for Yuji, as he watches his friends grow old and pass away. However, it’s also given him immense power, as he doesn’t suffer the weaknesses that come with aging. In some ways, this strange fate has made him more like Gojo than anyone else.

Yuji Is Carrying Gojo’s Will In The New Sequel
Yuji Itadori Lives By Gojo’s Words
As a fan, it’s become really clear to me that Yuji is now carrying the torch for Gojo. It’s heartbreaking remembering Gojo’s last request – he wanted Yuji to move forward and become a sorcerer unlike any other, even asking him to forget about him. And honestly, I think Yuji’s taking that to heart a little too much. He’s constantly second-guessing himself, trying so hard to follow Gojo’s advice, but I think he’s missing the bigger picture. Gojo didn’t want a copy; he wanted a successor who would surpass him! It feels like Yuji is trying to ‘raise the next generation’ like Gojo did, but he’s doing it all wrong. He’s focusing on self-doubt instead of building his own strength, and it’s frustrating to watch!
Yuka is seriously ill with cancer and doesn’t have much time left. It’s clear that Yuji should try to save her. If Gojo were in Yuji’s place, he definitely would have rescued Yuka and faced Dabura himself, because he always prioritized protecting his students.
Yuji isn’t quite as effortlessly likeable as he used to be, and surprisingly, that’s making him a more compelling character. The next part of the story, ‘JJK Modulo,’ will likely center on Yuji rediscovering himself and understanding the full meaning of Gojo’s final wishes. This journey will probably take place on the battlefield, where Dabura is facing off against Mahoraga, and fans are eagerly anticipating how Yuji will grow.
