The story will also leave players questioning the meaning of the mysterious “Numbers.”

Medal Of Honor: Frontline

Storming The Beaches

As a huge WWII buff, I’ve seen Normandy landings portrayed in tons of movies, but Medal of Honor: Frontline really stood out when it first came out. It was one of the first games to nail that feeling of being part of the invasion. Okay, the graphics aren’t amazing by today’s standards, but nothing beats that intense, chaotic rush of heading to the beach with your squad to take on the Nazis – and the rest of the game is just as gripping!

The shooting mechanics are solid for a game from the 2000s, though not quite as refined as the original Halo. What really stands out, even today, is the incredible audio design. With a good sound system or headphones, players truly feel immersed in the European battlefields. This is when the Medal of Honor series was at its best.

Battlefield 1

Shovel Soldier

World War 1 isn’t a common setting for video games because it’s a challenging conflict to build a game around. The developers of Battlefield 1 deserve praise for successfully creating a captivating experience. Rather than solely focusing on life in the trenches, the game highlights the diverse range of warfare during “The Great War,” including tank battles, aerial dogfights, zeppelin takedowns, and cavalry charges across the battlefield.

The game feels great to play, and it’s surprisingly fun to beat up enemies with shovels when you’re close to them – something you don’t often get to do in games besides Shovel Knight. It also features a compelling story mode and a healthy, active online community.

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Not On My Watch

Wolfenstein: The New Order begins like a classic World War II shooter, with hero B.J. Blazkowicz infiltrating a Nazi base on a rescue mission. However, the game takes a dark turn when the Allies lose the war, and the Nazis ultimately conquer the world.

This game presents a chilling alternate history where the Nazis won World War II. But there’s still hope, as protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz and his allies continue the fight. It’s a very violent game, but it balances the intense action with unexpected humor and twists. Wolfenstein: The New Order successfully blends classic shooter elements with modern gameplay, and it’s a shame we don’t see more games take such creative risks.

BioShock

Somewhere Beyond The Sea

BioShock is set in the 1960s, but you wouldn’t know it because the game takes place entirely in an underwater city. Within this ruined city, called Rapture, you’ll fight to survive and escape. Luckily, you’ll have a powerful arsenal at your disposal, including guns like pistols and Tommy guns, as well as special abilities gained from unique potions called Plasmids.

Players best remember BioShock for its plasmids, the imposing Big Daddy enemies, and the incredibly atmospheric city of Rapture. Beyond being a fun shooter, it’s also considered one of the most immersive horror games ever made.

Resistance 2

The Fall Of The America

Similar to Wolfenstein: The New Order, the original Resistance game was set during World War II. However, instead of fighting Nazis, the world united to combat an alien species called the Chimera. Sadly, the Chimera were victorious, and their invasion spread from Europe all the way to the West Coast of the United States.

Set in the 1950s, Resistance 2 brings back Nathan from the original game, tasked with fighting off the remaining Chimera. Players will use powerful alien weapons, including bullets that lock onto enemies, to overcome the odds. The game features a journey across a war-torn America, battling massive mechs, huge swarms of creatures, and various alien foes, making Resistance 2 a unique take on the alien invasion genre.

TimeSplitters 2

Through The Eras

TimeSplitters 2 starts in the future, but each mission involves traveling back to a different time period. The first mission, for example, is a stealth operation set in a Siberian base in 1990. Players will also visit places like Notre Dame in 1896 or Chicago in 1932, and no two missions are the same.

Of the three TimeSplitters games, TimeSplitters 2 is the most creative when it comes to its weapons, tools, environments, and unexpected plot twists. Fortunately, all of the TimeSplitters games can now be played on today’s gaming systems.

Call Of Juarez: Gunslinger

An Evolving Western

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is an action-packed Western shooter that will satisfy any fan of classic cowboy films. What makes the game truly stand out is its narrative, which follows Silas, a bounty hunter, as he tells stories about his past adventures while sitting in a bar.

The game unfolds as Silas recounts his tale, and players experience his story firsthand. However, other characters in the bar occasionally contradict him, offering different versions of events. These discrepancies directly alter the gameplay – the environment might shift, or new enemies could appear. Darkwatch

Okay, so I recently played Darkwatch, and it’s a really cool take on the Western genre. You play as Jericho, who’s just become a vampire, and you team up with this group called the Darkwatch. Basically, we’re trying to stop a vampire plague from taking over. But it’s not just vampires – I was blasting skeletons and all sorts of demons with some seriously awesome, supernatural guns – like revolvers and crossbows that have special abilities. It’s a fun mix of Wild West and paranormal action!

Jericho lets you unlock abilities, and the choices you make will shape how those abilities develop. While the main story isn’t very long or complex for a shooter, the game’s atmosphere is fantastic, and it offers a truly unique first-person shooter experience.

Singularity

An Experiment Gone Wrong

Singularity, a shooter game released in 2010, features a science experiment gone wrong in Russia that creates a strange anomaly. Players take on the role of Captain Renko, a marine sent to investigate. Upon entering the facility, he’s unexpectedly transported back in time to 1955, before the disastrous event occurs.

Players get a device that lets them change things around them by manipulating time. They might fix a broken staircase, bringing it back to its original condition to create a path. The device is also useful in fights – players can slow down enemies with it. The game Singularity creates a similar spooky atmosphere to BioShock, but the action takes place on land instead of underwater.
