Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen is proving to be fantastic, consistently delivering high-quality episodes. Now that the Culling Games are underway, we’re finally being introduced to characters that have been hinted at for a while but haven’t had a chance to shine until now.
Those who enjoy Jujutsu Kaisen understand that strength isn’t everything in the complex world of the series. Battles rely on a mix of special agreements called Binding Vows, unique cursed energy, and the incredibly powerful Domain Expansion. Most sorcerers aim for a technique that guarantees a hit, but the author, Gege Akutami, introduced Kinji Hakari, a character who breaks the established rules. Hakari stands out from the typical powerful fighters and ancient curses as a high-stakes gambler who treats battles like a game, proving that luck can be the most dangerous weapon when wielded by someone skilled.
Who is Kinji Hakari?
The Third-Year Sorcerer Who Even Gojo Respected
Kinji Hakari is a high school student currently suspended from Tokyo Jujutsu High, but he’s more known for his rebellious personality and an underground fight club he runs than for his academics. He was suspended after disagreeing with school officials about his unique fighting style. Despite this, Hakari is considered one of the most powerful jujutsu sorcerers alive. Satoru Gojo believes Hakari, along with Yuta Okkotsu, has the potential to rival his own strength someday. Hakari loves the excitement of risky bets, and that love is clearly reflected in his unpredictable and aggressive fighting style.
Pure Love Train: Romance Tropes As A Weapon
Visualizing A Shōnen Romance Manga Into Lethal Reality, Love Hurts As They Say
Hakari has a unique Cursed Energy ability even before using his Domain Expansion. Unlike Yuji, who uses raw force, or Gojo, who’s incredibly precise, Hakari’s attacks are jagged and abrasive, like sandpaper or barbed wire. His technique, called Private Pure Love Train, is inspired by a romance manga. He brings elements from the manga to life – things like ‘shutter doors’ to trap enemies and ‘ball effects’ to throw them off balance. These abilities, reminiscent of a pachinko machine, hint at the full extent of his power.
Idle Death Gamble: The Most Complex Domain In History
Spamming The House Until The Jackpot Hits Home
Hakari’s Domain Expansion, “Idle Death Gamble,” is incredibly well-designed. It’s a truly unique ability that essentially trades a guaranteed attack for guaranteed information. When the domain activates, its complicated rules are instantly understood by anyone caught inside. The domain itself looks like a pachinko machine, and Hakari wins by matching three of the same symbols.
He uses visual signals – like shifting backgrounds or character changes – and repeated attempts to improve his odds of success. If he fails, the process simply restarts, and his domain continues operating until he achieves his goal. Because the domain isn’t dangerous and operates on fixed rules, it activates very quickly, often surprising even experienced magic users. Think of it like a gacha game: each unsuccessful attempt increases your chances of winning until you’re guaranteed a prize.

The Four Minutes And Eleven Seconds Of Immortality
Once Hakari wins big, things really heat up. Specifically, he gains an endless supply of Cursed Energy for four minutes and eleven seconds – the length of the theme song from his manga, Admiring You. This surge of power is so intense that his body instinctively uses Reverse Cursed Technique to prevent him from being harmed.
Hakari is essentially immortal in this state. He can instantly regenerate any part of his body – limbs, organs, even his brain. He doesn’t need to worry about healing, as his body automatically repairs itself thanks to the constant flow of limitless cursed energy. This makes him an incredibly durable fighter, able to withstand attacks that would kill any other sorcerer, with Satoru Gojo being the only exception.
Hakari Vs. Kashimo: A Duel Of Infinite Stakes
Peak Fiction Fans Can’t Wait For
The fight between Hajime Kashimo and Yuji Itadori in the Culling Games is widely considered a highlight of the Jujutsu Kaisen series. Kashimo, a powerful sorcerer who wielded lightning and lived 400 years ago, was a perfect match for Hakari – both were relentless fighters who refused to give up. During their 4 minute and 11 second battle, Kashimo tried to figure out when Hakari’s limitless endurance would fail so he could land a finishing blow.
Turn up the volume!! Because this is a funeral for the living!! – Hajime Kashimo
Kashimo desperately tried to defeat Hakari with a powerful lightning attack, hoping to stop his Unique Ability from activating. However, Hakari was incredibly fortunate, managing to release the cursed energy through his nose while also healing himself. The battle was a fast-paced and intense exchange, proving that Hakari isn’t just relying on luck – he’s a brilliant fighter who consistently turns situations to his benefit.
The Gambler’s Flaw: Does Hakari Have A Weakness?
Relying Entirely On A Streak That Eventually Has To End
Even though Hakari is immortal, he’s most vulnerable at the beginning of his fights. Before he activates his Jackpot ability, he’s a powerful sorcerer, but still susceptible to being defeated if caught by surprise. If an opponent manages to kill him within his Domain Expansion before the jackpot symbols align, he loses. His immortality is also heavily dependent on a specific timing mechanic.
When the music stops, he briefly needs to reset everything and begin again. The only way to truly challenge Hakari is to survive his four-minute attack and then strike back, but that’s a strategy only a weaker opponent would consider.
