As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of a spiritual successor to Disco Elysium! The formation of Longdue Studios, spearheaded by veterans from the original team and bolstered by talent from Bungie, Rockstar, and Brave At Night, promises a narrative-first, psychological RPG experience that will undoubtedly resonate with gamers like me.
A fresh independent game studio called Longdue recently announced they are working on a game that can be considered a follow-up to the massively successful RPG titled Disco Elysium.
As we approach the fifth year since the release of Disco Elysium, a new team has been formed, boasting a dozen members, some of whom were previously involved in the development of the original game and its unannounced sequel. Additionally, there are new hires joining from studios such as Longdue (formerly known as Bungie, Rockstar, and Brave At Night).
The press release announcing the formation of Longdue says:
Longdue’s first RPG delves into the intricate dance between consciousness and subconsciousness, the visible and invisible realms. In this game, decisions impact not just the character’s surroundings, but also their inner self. Players will traverse a world that is in perpetual flux, influenced by both personal thoughts and external factors.
The game features a unique role-playing game (RPG) mechanism called ‘psychogeography’, where every decision you make alters not only the world but also the characters within it. In this immersive journey, the boundaries between thoughts and surroundings become indistinct, merging and changing with each decision, guiding players through a constantly shifting narrative environment.
According to Grant Roberts, our Narrative Director, the inspiration behind Longdue comes from timeless role-playing games such as Ultima, Wizardry, Fallout, Planescape, and Disco Elysium. We are eager to carry on this legacy by creating another RPG that emphasizes narrative and psychology, with the interaction between internal and external environments being the core element of gameplay. Our goal is to assemble a top-tier team to develop an outstanding game that will share an extraordinary story, and we can hardly wait to reveal more details about it.
Riaz Moola, representing Longdue as investor, shares his enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled to be backing an exceptional team of creative minds. Their work is focused on crafting a unique, story-driven video game experience and the technology to enhance game creation in the gaming industry.
The press release also says:
Longdue’s initial game is influenced by the creative spirit and tradition of role-playing games like Disco Elysium and Planescape: Torment, but it’s also designed to offer a unique, substantial contribution to the RPG genre on its own merit. The studio behind Longdue aims to create games that embody thoughtful design and compelling narratives, establishing them as a reliable, influential force in role-playing game development.
Longdue strives to craft games that evoke both emotional and intellectual responses. Our goal is to establish ourselves as a reliable studio, known for consistently delivering high-quality productions, with an emphasis on depth and coherent storytelling. This is merely the first step in our mission to earn a place of trust within the broader RPG community.
