The God Valley Incident is arguably the most impactful event in the history of One Piece. While recent events like the battles at Marineford and the defeats of Kaido and Big Mom were world-altering, even those pale in comparison to the sheer chaos and brutality of what happened at God Valley.
The truth behind this terrible event was hidden for a long time, but now we know who was involved and what they were planning. It began with the World Governmentâs unfair treatment of a nation, but quickly turned into a chaotic battle between the most powerful pirates and Marines. This conflict is where we first learn about the beginnings of Bartholomew Kuma, Monkey D. Dragon, and Blackbeard, and it also marks the end of Rocks D. Xebecâs reign.
Figarland Garling Launched the Native Hunting Competition to Attack the Davy Clan
The Entire God Valley Incident Was Just a Bloody Excuse to Destroy Imu’s Enemies

In shonen anime, understanding the reason behind a big event is crucial. The God Valley Incident wasn’t about the Navy showing its strength against the strongest pirates; it was a secret mission to eliminate Imu’s enemies. As the leader of the World Government, Imu has many rivals, especially those who carry the Will of D., and the entire Davy clan. This means some people are simply born as Imu’s opponents, making even harmless individuals targets. That’s why Figarland Garling, a member of the God Knights, decided to intervene.
Garling found the island of God Valley, rich in resources and inhabited by the Davy clan. This led to the creation of a brutal hunting competition where the locals were captured with tranquilizers and used as targets. The World Government orchestrated this cruel event to punish the people of God Valley for their refusal to join them, eliminate the Davy clan, and seize the island’s resources for Imu. The competition offered powerful Devil Fruits as prizes, including the Paw-Paw Fruit, the Fish-Fish Fruit’s Azure Dragon form, and the Horm-Horm Fruit â all exceptionally strong abilities involved in the God Valley Incident.
Kuma and Ivankov Escaped the God Valley Incident as Future Heroes

Future heroes like Bartholomew Kuma, Ginny, and Emporio Ivankov were there as young people, targeted by the Celestial Dragons. They survived thanks to their determination, good fortune, and finding powerful Devil Fruits. The experience profoundly changed all three of them.
The experiences on that island motivated all three of them to fight against the oppressive World Government and the powerful Navy, although it took Kuma time to fully embrace that path. Kuma had lost hope for his own future until Ginny and Ivankovâs unwavering determination and positive attitudes rekindled his fighting spirit. They each gained unique abilities: Kuma ate the Paw-Paw Fruit, and Ivankov consumed the Horm-Horm Fruit, before escaping together. However, fate took a dark turn when Kuma, in exchange for a cure for Bonney, allowed the scientist Dr. Vegapunk to transform him into a weapon, effectively making him a tool of the very World Government he once opposed.
Shanks, Shamrock, and Blackbeard Needed Rescue at God Valley
Dragon Rescued Three Children Who Would Help Make History

Teech was also present, part of the Davy clan and unaware of why the Marines and Celestial Dragons were targeting him and his mother. At that time, unlike the powerful Captain Blackbeard he would become, Teech was completely defenseless and would have perished if not for the compassion of a teenage Marine named Monkey D. Dragon. Dragon responded to Teechâs motherâs desperate plea for help, demonstrating his heroic nature and unknowingly allowing Teech to live and eventually become a fearsome villain â one of the Four Emperors.

I remember hearing the story of Shanks and Shamrock, twin brothers who really had Dragon to thank for their survival. Their father, Figarland Garling, didnât seem to care much for them or their mother, but Dragon did. When a huge battle broke out between the worldâs most powerful pirates and the Marines, Dragon made sure those little boys got to safety. Itâs amazing how different their lives became after that. Years later, Shamrock ended up just like his father, becoming one of the God Knights, while Shanks chose a completely different path, embracing the freedom of being a pirate and eventually becoming an Emperor.
Rocks, Roger, and Garp Had an Epic Showdown at God Valley
After That, God Valley Was Destroyed Altogether

The God Valley Incident was a tragic event marked by both miraculous escapes and the World Governmentâs ruthless attack on its opponents. It reached a peak of chaos when the three most powerful groups clashed, pitting some of the strongest fighters against each other. Rocks D. Xebec, the notorious captain of the Rocks Pirates, arrived at God Valley after learning the truth about the Native Hunting Competition. His sole purpose was to rescue his wife and son, making it his final, and most important, mission as a pirate. This brought him into direct conflict with both the Roger Pirates and the Navy.
The fight at God Valley was complete mayhem, with moments like Kaido stealing Big Mom’s Devil Fruit and glimpses of Shiki and Captain John as members of the Rocks Pirates. The most shocking event, however, was seeing Imu take control of Saturn and then use Domi Reversi on Rocks himself. This act perfectly showed how cruel and controlling Imu is, turning even enemies into obedient followers. It was this threat that forced rivals Gol D. Roger and Monkey D. Garp to join forces and finally defeat the Rocks Pirates.
The battle at God Valley ended with rocks falling and scattering Rogerâs crew, marking the end of an era. Garpâs actions during the fight made him a hero in the Marines, and Roger managed to escape with his key crew member, Scopper Gaban. However, the World Government, led by Imu, wasnât pleased with the outcome. Imu ordered God Valley to be completely destroyed, erasing the island and all records of what happened there â a brutal demonstration of their commitment to power and secrecy. Today, most people in the world of One Piece only know Garpâs side of the story, but figures like Dragon know the full truth, fueling their determination to finally overthrow Imuâs rule.
