LEGO is releasing a new building set based on the movie ‘Project Hail Mary’. It’s part of their popular Icons collection and will include a LEGO minifigure of Ryan Gosling – the first of its kind!
Andy Weir, the author of The Martian, released the science fiction novel Project Hail Mary in 2021. A movie starring Ryan Gosling is planned for release on March 20, 2026. Late in 2025, a source reported that LEGO was creating a set based on the book, with a planned release around March 2026. LEGO officially confirmed this on February 5th.
LEGO Project Hail Mary Set Lands March 1
LEGO is releasing a new building set based on the book and upcoming movie Project Hail Mary. Set number 11389, launching March 1st as part of the LEGO Icons line, it’s designed for adult builders (age 18+) and is best for display. The 830-piece set lets you build a detailed model of the Hail Mary spacecraft, along with a figure of the alien Rocky and a minifigure of astronaut Ryland Grace. Notably, the Ryland Grace minifigure will be LEGO’s first based on actor Ryan Gosling, who plays the character in the movie adaptation.

LEGO Project Hail Mary Set’s Rotating Base Is Both a Blessing and a Curse
The most striking aspect of this new LEGO set is its display stand. The Hail Mary spacecraft model sits on a large base that you can turn with a handle, recreating the feeling of gravity inside the spacecraft. While this rotating base makes the set unique and visually interesting, it also uses up a significant number of the 830 pieces, resulting in a relatively small spacecraft model.
Builders have recently pointed out that some LEGO sets, like the Leonardo da Vinci Flying Machine, Bowser’s Castle, and the Battle Droid, include overly complicated display bases that add extra pieces without really improving the building experience. The new Project Hail Mary set seems to follow this trend, but its base does at least have a useful feature: it rotates. Rotating displays aren’t new to LEGO, though – we saw it in the LEGO Education kit 9686 back in 2009, and more recently in the Technic NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket.

You can now pre-order the new LEGO set for $99.99. It will be available starting March 1st, a few weeks before the Project Hail Mary movie comes out. Currently, pre-orders are only available on LEGO’s official website, but other retailers will likely start taking pre-orders soon. To help prevent resellers from buying up all the stock, LEGO is limiting each customer to a maximum of three pre-orders as of February 5th.
The LEGO set based on ‘Project Hail Mary’ will include the first-ever Ryan Gosling minifigure. And there might be another one coming soon! Gosling is also starring in ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’ which comes out in 2027, and LEGO has always released sets connected to ‘Star Wars’ movies, so it’s likely we’ll see a minifigure based on his role in that film as well.
