After Dragon Ball Super came out, Dragon Ball GT feels quite dated. It was Toei Animation’s initial continuation of the Dragon Ball Z anime, but Akira Toriyama wasn’t heavily involved – he only updated the character designs and created some early concepts for the Black Star Dragon Ball Saga, which Funimation later released as Dragon Ball GT: The Lost Episodes.

Many fans consider Dragon Ball GT to be a weaker sequel to DBZ, but it actually has several strengths. One of its best features is how it deals with the passage of time. Unlike Dragon Ball Super, which often feels stuck in place, Dragon Ball GT genuinely feels like a continuation of Dragon Ball Z, with all the good and bad that comes with it. The characters in GT are incredibly powerful, and while Goku often takes center stage, the series reaches truly impressive levels of power scaling.

10. Despite Being Goku’s Greatest Student, Majuub Never Lived Up To His Potential

Uub begins Dragon Ball GT as a very promising character. After five years of training with Goku between the end of Dragon Ball Z and the start of Dragon Ball GT, he becomes one of the most powerful Z-Fighters. However, Dragon Ball GT often sidelines Uub and other strong characters, giving all the important battles and victories to Goku – a reason why some fans jokingly refer to the series as “Dragon Ball Goku Time.”

Despite not being heavily featured, Uub is incredibly powerful. After merging with Majin Buu, he becomes Majuub, and grows to be even stronger than Gohan – one of the universe’s most formidable fighters. While Majuub doesn’t have many opportunities to shine, he plays a vital supporting role for Goku, and even saved his life during the battle with Baby Vegeta.

9. Super Baby Vegeta 2 Would Have Killed Goku If It Weren’t For Super Saiyan 4

Even though villains in the later series Dragon Ball GT were generally more powerful, Super Baby Vegeta 2 gave Goku his toughest battle in the entire anime. Once Baby took control of Vegeta and reached his full potential, he became incredibly difficult to defeat. Super Baby Vegeta 2 was strong enough to defeat even Majin Buu and Majuub, and he easily overpowered Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 form, even after Goku regained his tail.

Without Goku’s transformations into the Golden Great Ape and Super Saiyan 4, Super Baby Vegeta 2 would have easily defeated him. Since the Baby Saga was initially planned as the end of Dragon Ball GT, it’s understandable why Super Baby Vegeta 2 was made so incredibly strong – he was supposed to be the last villain before the series continued with the Super 17 Saga.

8. Super 17 is the Strongest Android in Dragon Ball

Super 17 is the most powerful Android ever created, even surpassing Perfect Cell. He was built in Hell by the combined efforts of Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu, fusing Android 17 with Hell Fighter 17. Like the original Android 17, Super 17 has limitless energy and power. He also inherited the ability from Dr. Gero and Android 19 to drain energy from others, making him even stronger during fights – a tactic he effectively uses against Goku.

Super 17 is incredibly tough, able to withstand powerful attacks from Goku. However, Goku makes the fight harder on himself by repeatedly blasting Super 17 with energy attacks without really figuring out his weaknesses. Super 17 is so strong that the story of Dragon Ball GT gets stuck, forcing the writers to come up with a complicated way for regular Goku to defeat him with Android 18’s assistance, just to conclude the storyline.

7. Nuova Shenron is the Most Honorable Shadow Dragon & Gave SSJ4 Goku a Great Fight

Nuova Shenron stands out as the most compelling of the Shadow Dragons, and with good reason. The arc leading up to him featured a series of quick, unremarkable fights, but Nuova Shenron finally gives Goku a truly challenging battle – the best he’s had since the fight with Baby in Dragon Ball GT.

This fight feels like a classic Dragon Ball battle. Nuova Shenron is a traditional opponent, insisting on facing Goku one-on-one and showing a sense of honor. While not quite as strong as Super Saiyan 4 Goku, he’s a worthy opponent and puts up a good fight. Ultimately, Nuova Shenron is killed by Syn Shenron, the final villain of the series, while trying to protect Goku.

6. Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta Let Go of His Pride For Ultimate Power

Vegeta’s development is a highlight of Dragon Ball GT. While his rivalry with Goku continues in Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball GT shows a Vegeta who has moved past his pride and embraced life on Earth. This is especially clear during the Shadow Dragon Saga, where he willingly accepts Bulma’s assistance to achieve Super Saiyan 4 and help Goku battle the Shadow Dragons.

Vegeta achieves Super Saiyan 4 by using Blutz Waves, essentially forcing the transformation. Interestingly, even without dedicated training, this instantly boosts his power to match Goku’s – and potentially even equal it, given their ability to fuse. While Vegeta traditionally has a lower base power level than Goku, the sheer strength Goku possesses in DBGT makes it remarkable that Vegeta can reach the same heights without the same intense effort, highlighting his natural power.

5. GT Super Saiyan 4 Goku is Stronger Than Super Saiyan 4 Goku in Dragon Ball DAIMA

While Dragon Ball DAIMA recently confirmed Super Saiyan 4 as official, the version of SSJ4 Goku in DAIMA doesn’t quite compare to the one from Dragon Ball GT. The Super Saiyan 4 Goku from GT remains incredibly powerful – one of the strongest transformations in the entire series. In fact, Super Dragon Ball Heroes even boosts this form to a level comparable to the God-like Super Saiyan Blue.

I’ve always found it strange how Dragon Ball GT seemed determined to avoid letting Super Saiyan 4 Goku actually win big fights. After he defeated Baby, he consistently lost to the main villains – Super 17, Syn Shenron, and Omega Shenron – and ended up finishing those arcs in his normal form. Most of his victories as a Super Saiyan 4 came against the smaller, less important Shadow Dragons. It’s not that SSJ4 Goku was weak, but the show just had a really peculiar way of handling things, narratively.

4. Syn Shenron Didn’t Need To Absorb the Dragon Balls to Beat Goku

Despite being incredibly powerful in his Super Saiyan 4 form, Goku was clearly surpassed by Syn Shenron. Syn Shenron, the strongest of the Shadow Dragons, easily defeated Goku in battle. Even with his Super Saiyan 4 transformation, Goku’s attacks barely affected Syn Shenron, who relentlessly overpowered him. The other Z-Fighters were also no match for Syn Shenron, who quickly defeated them all.

Goku can only transform when he takes energy from his allies, unlocking a stronger form of Super Saiyan 4. However, even this powerful state isn’t enough to defeat Syn. Syn eventually learns from Goku’s strategy and uses the Dragon Balls to absorb the negative energy of other Shadow Dragons, becoming the incredibly powerful Omega Shenron.

3. Golden Great Ape Baby Vegeta Could Have Beaten Super Saiyan 4 Goku

Baby Vegeta is an incredibly powerful villain. When his Super Baby Vegeta 2 form starts to lose against Super Saiyan 4 Goku, he transforms into a Golden Great Ape to even the odds. This transformation makes Baby Vegeta much stronger than Goku. Although Goku fights bravely, Old Kai observes that Baby Vegeta has a clear advantage in terms of pure power.

Baby Vegeta’s biggest weakness, despite his incredible Golden Great Ape power, is his inability to fully master the form. He still has the same vulnerabilities as a regular Great Ape, most notably his tail. Just like in the original Saiyan Saga, Goku defeats Golden Great Ape Baby Vegeta by cutting off his tail, which causes him to lose his power.

2. Omega Shenron is Still One of the Strongest Villains in Dragon Ball History

When Syn Shenron takes in the power of the negative Dragon Balls, he transforms into Omega Shenron, a remarkably powerful villain in the Dragon Ball series. Omega is so strong that even Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Vegeta fighting together aren’t enough to defeat him. They have to combine their power and become Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta just to have a chance. In their final battle, Omega Shenron actually manages to defeat and kill Goku.

Omega Shenron seemingly defeats Goku with his Negative Energy Ball, but a strange event allows Goku to survive in a limbo-like state. This is hinted at when Omega’s attacks pass right through Goku as he gathers energy for one last, massive Spirit Bomb. The story suggests the Dragon Balls played a role, transforming Goku into a god-like being, which explains why he departs with Shenron at the end of Dragon Ball GT. Without the Dragon Balls’ help, Omega Shenron would have destroyed not only Goku but all the Z-Fighters.

1. Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta is the Strongest Dragon Ball Character Who’s Never Won a Fight

The Dragon Ball series often introduces incredibly strong fused characters who, surprisingly, don’t usually win their battles. This happened with Gotenks and Vegito in Dragon Ball Z, and it occurred again with Gogeta in Dragon Ball GT. When Goku and Vegeta fuse, they become Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, a warrior so powerful that Omega Shenron doesn’t seem to be a match. While it’s exciting to watch Omega get defeated, the fight feels similar to Gotenks’ battle against Super Buu – a powerful display that doesn’t quite lead to a decisive victory in the larger story.

Similar to his fight with Super Buu, Gogeta doesn’t finish off Omega Shenron because he spends too much time playing around. However, Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta is incredibly powerful. If he’d been more focused and acted quickly, he could have defeated Omega Shenron instantly.
