I’m really into Half Sword, and it’s mostly about getting up close and personal with swords and other melee weapons – though you can throw them if you’re good! There’s one exception though: a crossbow. It’s tough to find, but it’s totally worth it. I was struggling to find one myself, so I figured I’d share a guide on where to get a crossbow in Half Sword and how to use it. It’s a bit tricky to reload, so I’ll cover that too!
How To Get A Crossbow In Half Sword
Currently, crossbows aren’t available for purchase. You can only find them in a chest located near the abandoned wagon on the forest map. This applies to Progression mode, and you’ll need to reach the Peasant rank to unlock access to the forest map. Keep in mind this could change during early access.
It doesn’t always appear in the same spot, so you might need to try a few times. Once you’ve won the battle, don’t move forward – go to the chest and grab the crossbow by pressing Q or E.
Make sure you’re holding the crossbow or have it on your back when exiting the map.
Insure The Crossbow To Keep It & Gain It In Free Mode
If you want to keep the crossbow forever, visit the trader at the inn and pay to insure it. It costs gold, but it’s a good investment because you’ll also be able to use the crossbow in Free Mode.
How To Get Quivers & Bolts
In Half Sword, you can hit enemies with almost anything, even a crossbow. However, you need bolts to actually fire the crossbow.
Okay, so if you’re looking for crossbow bolts, I found the best place to start is a small chest in the forest, right near where you pick up the crossbow itself. But be warned, it’s totally random if one will actually be there! I’ve also had luck finding bolts in barrels and other chests, sometimes even on the alley map.
Bolts can also be picked up once shot. Sometimes they can even be pulled out of foes.
How To Use A Crossbow In Half Sword
For better aim when using the crossbow in Half Sword, quickly switch to first-person view by pressing the ‘V’ key.
Then hold RMB to raise the crossbow and aim. To shoot, press LMB.
How To Reload The Crossbow In Half Sword
You’ll usually need to keep firing and won’t have much time to reload unless you’re dealing with several enemies at once. But when you do get a moment, press R to start reloading.
You’ll see the crossbow and its bolts displayed on the screen. To prepare the crossbow, click and drag the string down with your left mouse button until it locks into place. Then, click on a bolt in the quiver with your left mouse button and drag it onto the crossbow.
If you have no bolt, press R again to cancel reloading.
Tips For Using The Crossbow In Half Sword
- Start fights with one shot, but then switch to a melee weapon.
- Crossbows are almost useless once enemies wear breastplates and helmets.
- Only drop the crossbow during fights if you’ve insured it.
- You can make foes surrender by pressing the crossbow into their neck.
- Aim for their midriff for the best chance of hitting.
- Aim lower than where it looks like the arrow will go.
- Aim for the legs once they start wearing chest armor.
- You can pick up bolts and hold them as weapons.
