Everyone always talks about the best years for gaming, but I think we should be talking about the best months too. And for me, November 2004 is right up there, especially if you’re into first-person shooters. FPS games are huge – everyone loves them, and critics always seem to give them high scores. There have been so many great ones over the years, but a few really stand out as all-time classics.
When you think of the most popular first-person shooter games, a few names always come up. Halo, Half-Life, and Metroid Prime are among the best, and each offers something different. Halo is known for its cooperative story mode and fantastic multiplayer, while Half-Life provides a gripping single-player experience with clever physics puzzles. Metroid Prime focuses on exploration and solving mysteries in alien environments. Despite their differences, all three are top-notch FPS games, which makes it remarkable that new installments of each were released in the same month – November 2004.
Wow, November 2004 was an amazing month for gaming! As a huge FPS fan, I remember being completely blown away by the fact that Halo 2, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, and Half-Life 2 all came out within a single week of each other. Halo 2 dropped on the Xbox on November 9th, Metroid Prime 2 hit the GameCube on the 15th, and then Half-Life 2 landed on PC the 16th. It was a crazy time! Halo 2 is still considered one of the best multiplayer shooters ever, with a fantastic 95 on Metacritic. Metroid Prime 2 didn’t quite reach the heights of the first Metroid Prime, but it still got a stellar 92. But Half-Life 2? That game is legendary – it scored a 96 and is consistently ranked among the top 20 highest-rated games of all time! Just those three titles alone make November 2004 a landmark month for FPS games, and honestly, for gaming as a whole. And the really wild part is, there were even more great releases around then too! It was just an incredible period.
November 2004 saw the release of several great games, including first-person shooters like Counter-Strike: Source, Killzone, Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, and GoldenEye: Rogue Agent. Beyond shooters, titles like Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Jak 3, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and World of Warcraft were also released that month. These are just a few examples – November 2004 was an incredibly strong month for video games, with something for everyone.
The Nintendo DS handheld was also released in November 2004.
Will We Ever Get Another Month Like November 2004?
Games now take much longer to develop, so we likely won’t see a month with as many big releases as November 2004 ever again. That month was packed with incredible new games across all genres, especially first-person shooters. While new, major game launches aren’t as frequent now, fall is still usually a great time for fans of FPS games.

Each autumn, a new Call of Duty game is released, and we often see other new first-person shooter (FPS) games come out around the same time. Last year, Battlefield 6 was a big hit, launching just weeks before the newest Call of Duty title. Throughout the year, other FPS games appear – Doom: The Dark Ages came out a few months before Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 7, and Highguard was released last month. While it’s not as crowded as November 2004, we still get several major new FPS games every year.
