In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, some sorcerers possess extraordinary abilities granted by a higher power. These sorcerers, known as Heavenly Restricted Sorcerers, receive these gifts, but at the cost of something they deeply value.

Some of the most fascinating characters in Jujutsu Kaisen have something called Heavenly Restriction. This is a trade-off: some gain incredible physical strength but lose cursed energy, while others gain a huge amount of cursed energy but have very fragile bodies. Kokichi Muta is a student at Jujutsu Kyoto High, and he seems to have the most difficult situation of anyone with Heavenly Restriction in Jujutsu Kaisen. Unlike others, his Heavenly Restriction doesn’t make him stronger; it actually makes his body incredibly weak. This means he receives a gift that is the opposite of what others with this condition experience.

Kokichi Muta’s unique ability, Heavenly Restriction, gives him a large amount of cursed energy and allows him to expertly control puppets from far away. However, compared to others with the same ability, he’s considered relatively weak. He’s physically frail and vulnerable – even sunlight can harm him, and if found, he’s easily defeated. Despite his physical weaknesses, his control over cursed energy is strong enough to rank him as a Semi Grade 1 Sorcerer.

How Kokichi Muta Achieved His Heavenly Restriction

Kokichi Muta possesses a uniquely rare ability called a Heavenly Restriction. These abilities are uncommon to begin with, but Muta’s case is especially unusual: he was born with a frail body despite having a massive amount of cursed energy. It seems this was simply how he was born. As a child, he suffered constant physical pain and was missing certain body parts. This continued until Mahito used a special technique called Idle Transfiguration, as part of a magical agreement, to repair his body.

Tsurugi Okkotsu

I just learned that Maki Zenin’s grandson, Tsurugi Okkotsu, has also overcome his Heavenly Restriction! It’s interesting because his restriction works just like Maki’s – he gets a significant boost in physical power, but it weakens his cursed energy in return.

Tsurugi is a remarkably powerful fighter, thanks to his unique ability, the Heavenly Restriction, and his exceptional swordsmanship. He’s strong enough to battle opponents like Maru in JJK Modulo, who possesses an incredibly potent Cursed Technique called Chaos and Harmony – a power that lets him manipulate the very laws of nature.

How Tsurugi Achieved His Heavenly Restriction

Tsurugi’s special ability, called a Heavenly Restriction, manifested in an unusual way. Like his grandmother, Maki Zenin, he was born with a natural connection to cursed energy. This left fans curious about how the author, Gege, would explain the specifics of his power. Unlike Toji, Tsurugi wasn’t born without cursed energy, and in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, Maki needed her twin to overcome her own cursed energy, making Tsurugi’s situation quite different.

In the continuation of the story, Rika, Yuta’s cursed spirit, merged with Tsurugi. When they separated, Rika absorbed all of Tsurugi’s remaining cursed energy and also gave him Maki’s powerful Split Soul Katana. This made Tsurugi exceptionally strong, though he still needs more battle experience to reach the level of the incredibly powerful monsters seen in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Toji Fushiguro

Toji Fushiguro was the first character Gege Akutami introduced with a unique condition called a Heavenly Restriction. He served as the primary villain in the Hidden Inventory Arc, known for being the ‘Sorcerer Killer.’ This restriction meant Toji didn’t have any cursed energy, but instead possessed incredible physical strength and power, allowing him to even fight against the powerful Gojo Satoru.

Gojo hadn’t mastered his full abilities back then. After he unlocked Cursed Technique Reversal and RCT, defeating Toji was simple. However, Toji was incredibly strong, and his power terrified the entire Zenin clan, even long after he died.

How Toji Achieved His Heavenly Restriction

Toji Fushiguro was born without any cursed energy – a condition known as Heavenly Restriction. Unlike Maki and Tsurugi, who had very little cursed energy at birth, Toji had none. This meant he was naturally gifted with incredible physical strength and was a formidable fighter from the very beginning.

Toji Fushiguro became incredibly skilled over time, and he used powerful weapons to enhance his abilities. One notable weapon was the Inverted Spear of Heaven, which could nullify cursed techniques – though Gojo later destroyed it. He also used the Split Soul Katana, a weapon that Maki Zenin also carried a copy of.

Maki Zenin

Maki Zenin is likely the most powerful character in Jujutsu Kaisen who has a Heavenly Restriction. Like Toji and Tsurugi, she lacks Cursed Energy but gains incredible physical strength as a trade-off. Even before fully realizing the benefits of her Restriction, Maki demonstrated this strength by surviving a powerful fire attack from Jogo during their fight.

Maki was officially ranked as a Grade 4, but she was already much more powerful than that ranking suggested.

Once Maki fully mastered her abilities and awakened her potential, she became powerful enough to rival even the strongest cursed spirits. Sukuna, a notoriously powerful curse himself, compared fighting her to fighting Mahoraga, a nearly unstoppable opponent. He was even caught off guard by her during their battle, unable to predict her attacks.

How Maki Achieved Her Heavenly Restriction

Okay, so for a long time, Maki wasn’t reaching her full potential! Up until Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen, she still had a bit of cursed energy holding her back – she couldn’t quite reach Toji’s level. But everything changed when Mai died. It’s this really interesting thing in the JJK universe – twins are seen as one entity, which severely limits their power. Because Mai was gone, after the events of Perfect Preparation, Maki was finally free to unlock everything she was capable of. It was incredibly impactful!

I witnessed Maki’s incredible growth firsthand. Once she fully awakened her abilities, she utterly destroyed the entire Zenin Clan. And it wasn’t a peak – she just kept getting stronger. People started saying she’d become a monster, comparable to Toji, and this was before the fight with Sukuna or anything that happened in the Modulo timeline. As she matured, she even learned to use a basic Domain Expansion with her weapons, and surprisingly, she was the one who taught Tsurugi Okkotsu how to do it. It became clear that Maki had pushed her Heavenly Restriction to its absolute limit – she’d achieved everything possible with it.
