Horizon 3 Gets Disappointing Update

A trusted source says that Horizon 3 is likely quite a ways off. While a third game was hinted at some time ago, it seems Guerrilla Games is now prioritizing the new Horizon game they recently announced, which will be a co-op experience.

I was so excited when Guerrilla first hinted at the next Horizon game – Horizon 3 – back in April 2023, right after Horizon Call of the Mountain came out! They said they were planning both Aloy’s next big adventure and a separate online game. Well, after almost three years, we finally found out what that online project was: Horizon Hunters Gathering, a co-op game where you can play with up to three friends. But honestly, I’m still really waiting for news about Horizon 3 – it feels like we haven’t heard anything about that one in ages!

Most of Guerrilla Games Is Reportedly Focused on Horizon Hunters Gathering

Don’t expect an announcement for Horizon 3 soon. According to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg – a journalist known for accurate reporting on Sony’s game studios – the majority of Guerrilla Games is currently working on Horizon Hunters Gathering. When asked if this meant Horizon 3 is still a ways off, Schreier confirmed that it is.

Horizon Hunters Gathering Has Been Polarizing Fans Since Reveal

The news that Hunters Gathering is taking resources away from Horizon 3 is probably upsetting to some fans, especially since the first look at the co-op game wasn’t well-received. Many players on social media and the PlayStation Blog have voiced doubts about Horizon Hunters Gathering. They’re worried about getting tired of games that constantly require online play and are concerned that Sony is pushing another studio known for single-player games into making a multiplayer game, particularly after several recent attempts at live-service games haven’t been successful.

Many fans of the Horizon series have reacted negatively to the news of a multiplayer spin-off, with one Reddit user stating they’d much prefer a new, full Horizon game. Others criticized the trend of “live-service” games, arguing they drain resources from creating worthwhile, original titles. Concerns also arose regarding the new game’s more cartoonish art style, a departure from the series’ realistic look, and whether this project might delay the development of Horizon 3. Recent comments from journalist Jeff Schreier seem to confirm these fears about the impact on the main series.

Despite some public doubt, the initial reaction to Horizon Hunters Gathering hasn’t been all bad. Many fans are excited about the idea of teaming up to hunt machines, comparing it to a Monster Hunterstyle Horizon* game. Others have appreciated Guerrilla Games quickly confirming features like crossplay, the ability to continue progress on different platforms, and the option to play the game alone.

Horizon 3 Most Likely Isn’t Launching Before PlayStation 6

Considering Guerrilla Games is currently focused on developing Horizon Hunters Gathering, a new Horizon game likely won’t be released for several years. This suggests the next major installment in the Horizon series will probably arrive during the PlayStation 6’s lifespan. While the PS6 was initially expected around late 2027, recent shortages of RAM—and the resulting price increases—could push the console’s release to 2028 or beyond, as Sony waits for component costs to become more stable. Guerrilla still needs to answer key questions about Horizon Hunters Gathering itself, including its price and when players can expect it to launch.
