There are few experiences in gaming as thrilling as battling a powerful dragon. These huge, impressive, winged beasts come in all sorts of varieties – from classic fire-breathers to more unusual types – and often serve as the peak moment in fantasy games. Surprisingly, though, dragons aren’t featured as often as you might think, and even fewer games let you hunt and fight them repeatedly, beyond just one big battle at the end.
Despite the challenge, many fantastic games allow players to fully experience the life of a dragon hunter – from finding and preparing to face these powerful creatures, to bravely entering the fight. These battles are incredibly memorable, difficult, and require players to be well-equipped and highly skilled. Even though these fights are often optional, they’re usually worth the effort, offering valuable rewards. Let’s explore some of the best recent games featuring repeated dragon battles that players won’t soon forget.
The games below are sorted only by release date.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
“But There Is One They Fear. In Their Tongue, He’s Dovahkiin”
It’s no surprise that Skyrim is famous for its dragons. Players become the Dragonborn, a special hero with dragon blood and the ability to absorb a dragon’s power after defeating it. Throughout the game, you’ll encounter and battle over a dozen unique dragons, with many more respawning for continued challenges. What sets Skyrim apart is that you face a dragon very early in the game, immediately showcasing its grand scale and epic adventure.
Although Skyrim features a wide variety of dragons, players only need to defeat a handful to complete the main story: Mirmulnir, Sahloknir, a dragon near Karthspire, and the final boss, Alduin. While the dragon fights aren’t as visually stunning as some modern games – considering Skyrim came out almost 15 years ago – the game remains beloved by many and is still strongly associated with dragons in gaming.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
“Dragons Are the Embodiment of Raw Power. But It’s All Uncontrolled, Savage… So They Need to Be Destroyed”
As you’d expect from the title, dragons are a key part of every Dragon Age game. However, Dragon Age: Inquisition still does this better than even the newest game, The Veilguard. While The Veilguard has some excellent dragon fights, there aren’t enough of them, and most appear towards the end of the game. Inquisition, in contrast, features amazing dragon battles throughout the entire experience, with over a dozen encounters – some are so impressive they rank among the best in gaming.
The dragons in Inquisition are all incredibly powerful and unique enemies, each with a distinct name, size, age, and set of abilities. What makes them so engaging is how they feel truly alive during battle – they move around, call for help, and change their tactics throughout the fight. You’ll encounter a diverse range of dragons, from those breathing fire, frost, or thunder, to special corrupted dragons like the Red Lyrium dragon, which some players even mistake for a powerful Archdemon. While most dragon hunts in Dragon Age: Inquisition are optional, they’re well worth doing. Each fight is memorable and impressive, and defeating a dragon often rewards you with some of the game’s best gear.
Monster Hunter: World
“So We Have Elder Dragons Eating Other Elder Dragons. Wonderful”
For fantasy fans who love the idea of hunting huge, dragon-like creatures, the Monster Hunter series is a fantastic choice. Each game features a wide range of winged beasts – everything from classic dragons and wyverns to serpents and wyrms. If you’re looking for a great dragon-hunting experience, Monster Hunter: World is a perfect place to start. The game also includes Elder Dragons – the oldest and most powerful monsters – which provide incredibly exciting battles.
Battling Elder Dragons in Monster Hunter: World feels like taking on a god. Whether it’s Safi’jiiva, Zorah Magdaros, Shara Ishvalda, Nergigante, Velkhana, or even more with the Iceborne expansion (bringing the total to over 15!), Monster Hunter: World is a dream come true for monster hunters. It really emphasizes the thrill of the hunt better than any other game. And even when you’re not facing Elder Dragons, there’s still plenty of excitement to be had tracking down and fighting a huge variety of creatures – from dragon-like wyverns to massive sea monsters, none of them are easy to defeat.
Elden Ring
“Mighty Dragon, Thou’Rt a Trueborn Heir. Lend Me Thy Strength, O Kindred”
FromSoftware’s games, starting with Demon’s Souls, are famous for their tough and exciting dragon battles – some of the best in the action-RPG world. While dragons like Seath the Scaleless and Kalameet from the Dark Souls series are already legendary, Elden Ring takes things to a whole new level. It has more dragons than any previous FromSoftware game, and several of these encounters are incredibly grand and epic – truly unmatched by most other games.
Three dragon battles are particularly memorable: Lichdragon Fortissax, Dragonlord Placidusax, and Bayle the Dread, a truly terrifying boss from the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Each fight is both grand and incredibly challenging, testing players’ skills to the limit. These dragons are impressive, with distinct attacks and behaviors – they attack constantly and soar through the air, creating a spectacle that rivals big-budget fantasy films. Beyond these major dragon bosses, Elden Ring features over a dozen more, ranging from unexpected aerial attacks to massive magma wyrms and the enormous, slow-moving Elder Dragon Greyoll. This makes Elden Ring one of the greatest games for dragon hunting ever created.
God of War Ragnarök
“Once We Approach the Dragon, We Will Kill or Be Killed”
Dragons haven’t always been common enemies in the God of War series, especially considering its roots in Greek mythology which already featured many fearsome creatures. However, the 2018 God of War reboot started to include dragons more prominently, with a memorable boss fight against the ancient dragon Hræzlyr and several side quests focused on rescuing dragons. God of War Ragnarök continues this trend, and players will likely enjoy finding and defeating optional dragon bosses for valuable rewards.
In God of War Ragnarök, players can challenge five unique and optional winged dragons, such as Crimson Dread and Ash Tyrant, which become available later in the game. Beyond these major dragons, the realms are also filled with smaller, dangerous drakes and drekis. Finding and defeating these dragons requires exploration, but the game’s excellent combat makes each encounter enjoyable. As a reward, players who defeat all the dragons can obtain and fully upgrade the Dragon Scaled armor – a fitting prize for a dedicated dragon hunter.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
“From This Moment Forth, You Are Arisen, Charge and All”
Similar to the Dragon Age games, Dragon’s Dogma 2 immediately appeals to fans of dragon combat, starting with its title and storyline. The game begins as the original did: players are defeated by a powerful dragon who steals their heart. This sets the Arisen on a journey to reclaim it, facing difficult challenges like navigating dangerous lands and battling various mythical creatures, ultimately culminating in a final boss battle. Beyond the main dragon, players can hunt numerous powerful creatures in the open world – like drakes and smaller dragons – to collect valuable items such as Wyrmslife Crystals and Dragon Scales.
The series is known for its incredible boss battles, where you fight gigantic creatures you can actually climb to find and attack their weak points. Dragon’s Dogma 2 continues this tradition. The dragons and other large monsters in the game are incredibly active and dangerous, using powerful attacks like fire breath and grabbing moves, and even taking to the air unexpectedly. Players can target specific body parts – like wings – to trigger dramatic reactions, and your AI companions (Pawns) make each fight even more intense and unforgettable.
