I can’t believe Terraria is still so popular after all these years! It’s amazing to see Re-Logic keep this game going strong, whether I’m playing it constantly or just remembering it from that Minecraft reference. The new Bigger & Boulder update has really brought everyone back – over 200,000 people are playing on Steam, which is incredible! Of course, a lot of us have put tons of hours into Terraria already, and might be looking for something new after checking out the update. Luckily, Echoes of the Hive seems like just the thing to fill that void!
Many things make Terraria great, and any game trying to be similar needs to get those right. It blends the exploration of “metroidvania” games with the building of Minecraft, but offers more engaging combat and creative possibilities, alongside a rewarding sense of progress and lots of loot. It also features surprisingly rich lore, consistent updates and collaborations from its developers, and hundreds of items to collect. While its 2D art style might not appeal to everyone, and some players might find Minecraft easier to pick up, Terraria clearly has a dedicated fanbase who enjoy its unique look. That’s why Steam’s Echoes of the Hive has the potential to be very popular – it successfully captures the same feeling as Terraria in almost every way.
Per Echoes of the Hive’s Steam page, the game is set to release in Q1 2026.
Echoes of the Hive Features At a Glance
- EXPLORE a 2D sandbox with randomly generated worlds
- ENJOY co-op gameplay with a group of friends
- BATTLE numerous monsters and bosses
- GATHER resources and loot while avoiding traps
- BUILD bases and platforms for traversal
- CRAFT weapons, tools, and armor
I love getting lost in these amazing game worlds, especially when I can build up my character with awesome gear. Fighting monsters is a blast, but the real thrill comes from exploring deep down into dungeons, discovering hidden secrets, and finally taking on those huge, epic bosses. It’s such a rush!
Echoes of the Hive is as Terraria-Inspired as It Gets

It’s immediately obvious that Echoes of the Hive draws heavy inspiration from Terraria. The game features 2D pixel art, hearts representing health, and a similar overall aesthetic. Beyond the visuals, the gameplay is also very reminiscent of Terraria; players are dropped into a randomly generated world and will face challenging “epic bosses,” starting with a giant minotaur. Like Terraria, Echoes of the Hive focuses on character progression and rewarding players with powerful loot.
The promotional image for Echoes of the Hive shows a stone golem, hinting it might be a challenging boss battle. It will be exciting to see if the game’s enemies can create as much of an impact as the iconic bosses in Terraria.
Like many sandbox games, you’ll collect materials to craft items and build bases in this game. You can even create pathways with blocks to reach new heights. These bases are visually similar to those in Terraria. Inside, you’ll find chests to store the items you earn, but getting those items means fighting creatures and dodging traps. You can play alone or with friends, just like in Terraria. The biggest feature of the game seems to be a huge cave system hidden beneath the surface world.
Okay, so the world above ground looks pretty cool with lots of different areas, but honestly, the caves are where it’s at. They seem to go on forever, and I’m expecting to find some seriously tough enemies, awesome gear, and maybe even a few secrets down there. The trailer showed a lot of falling rocks, so I’ll definitely need to watch my step! It feels a lot like Terraria at its core, which is great, but what really excites me is that the developers seem committed to constantly updating and improving the game, just like Terraria did. That means it could become something truly special over time.
Echoes of the Hive’s Free Updates Could Be a Game-Changer
Image via Leon Tremlow While Echoes of the Hive hasn’t revealed what its promised “free updates” will include, the fact that they’re planned is exciting news for Terraria fans. Terraria’s continued success after 15 years proves how valuable free updates can be, as Re-Logic has consistently delivered them. Even without this support, the game would likely still be popular, but it probably wouldn’t be performing so well against newer titles like Marvel Rivals on Steam so many years after its release. Players who invest in Echoes of the Hive can expect ongoing free content, which will enhance and expand the game. This is particularly appealing for indie games, where dedicated developers are often eager to add extra features and improvements.

Echoes of the Hive Forging Its Own Identity Will Be The Deciding Factor
Image via Leon Tremlow From what we’ve seen, Echoes of the Hive has a lot of promise, and it could be a great fit for Terraria fans looking for something new, as the two games share similarities. However, the game can’t succeed by simply copying Terraria. Terraria remains incredibly popular, with updates consistently drawing players back. Because Terraria continues to satisfy its audience with fresh content, the need for a similar game is lessened. Still, Echoes of the Hive looks genuinely enjoyable – the minotaur fight and intricate caves are particularly appealing – and we hope it delivers a satisfying and unique experience.
